Hi mums and dads,
There is a recent report that Malaysians will be cutting down on the Ang Pow packages due to higher cost of living.

Your comments please?

PS. How much do you normally give for:
a.Immediate Family, b.Relatives, Friends/ c.Neighbour Kids, d.Office Auntie/Cleaners?

"distant cousins' kids" defined as DH's paternal aunty's children's children...only see them once a yr or once every 2-3 yrs.
"close friends' kids"...20+ yrs of friendship...see many times in a year, so must give more.

I look at my pocket first before giving.

srry ar i guess i de most niao here but i got my reasons ok as the youngest in the entire parternal family mostly i am not allowed to give and if i give max $2 cannot be more then that my grand nieces (yea my family is big am a very young great grand auntie lol) do report to their parents and indirectly they report to their parents and then i will get niam for the rest of cny my hp be ringing nonstop asking why i give so much use to give 20ea, but i stil get angpows even though i am married only dh dont have lol thus he does not like to go bai nian at my family side understandable he feels no face so i settle all at chu yi just pop over my eldest uncle place show face wish him give those i see then i hide at home for the next few days with the kids.

My maternal side is 20ea regardless but my kids do receive la ang pow belong ten this yr recieve 1$ gold coin from dont know who told my kids is not the amount is the thoughts that count.

i dont give my dad as he will not take so i buy him hamper which he like to display in return my step mom and him give me ya shui qian my dad will change 200 for me yrly in new notes my step mum will give 400 inclusive of the kids ya shui qian.

as we do save alot yrly we give the kids 500 ea to deposit into their acc for their future.

as what my dua pek said to me is not about the ang pao is about the thought and well wishes.

Typically for Chinese, the need to look 'good' to relatives is a never-ending cycle. You have to weigh the cost/benefit. If giving a big ang pow is within your means, then by all means spread the wealth. But if giving nice ang pows is going to burn a big hole in the pocket, then it may be better to give what is most comfortable. Most importantly, its the thought that counts.
