Hi,

In the past, I have heard stories from others that getting a place in top IP institutions like RI, RGS & HCI in sec 1 does not guarantee one auto-promotion to Yr 5. It does not bother me then. However, recently, I have heard it direct from the school during one of the briefing for parents. Students who does not meet certain criterion will be advised to transfer to a school more suited to his/her calibre. An overall GPA of 3.2 and below is considered bad and is the lowest rung (the botom 5% of the cohort), the danger group who may fall through the gap of the IP system. Even 3.6 is considered slightly below average. Such schools take in overseas scholars at sec3 to help push up their A level performances and rankings. How sad! I wonder how many students were told to leave every year? Of these, how many were from primary GEP?

Has anyone any personal experience to share?

Yes, it does not. But there is a huge chance you still will be. If you do not, treat it as you screwed your psle and ended up in an o level school

Which school said this specifically, Fairy? I'm interested to know.

I know for certain that HCI has a class for 'O' Level - these are the ones who can't make the mark for IP. Should they have very few students who can't make it and they decided not to have an 'O' Level class, then they will advise those who can't make the mark to look for other schools to transfer to. So far, it seems like they have one class yearly after the end of Sec 2.

As these are indept schools, the fees are high. I am not sure of how it works, but I heard that the "scholarship" will be affected if kid is transferred out of IP. The case I heard is for GEP student - so not sure which "scholarship" but know that kid will have to pay fee of >$300 for 'O' Level class in HCI.

Hope some parents from the other IP schools can share info on this.

So far how is their 'O' level result at HCI? Heard the 'O' students will still have to leave HCI if they dont meet the COP of HCI (college). Currently is 3 !. How many actually left HCI at end of sec 2 ? I think it is bad for the child's morale if the child has to be transferred to another school .

From what I heard, there is an internal COP for HCI 'O' students and it is not 3 (> 3 but I don't know the exact COP). If the student doesn't make this internal mark, then he has to transfer to another JC. Maybe parents / student who knows this can share.

May I assume every IP school has different formula for GPA calculation? For NJC, student needs a GPA of 2 to be promoted to next year. GPA of 4 will make it to the Dean's list, I don't see a GPA of 3.6 in NJC consider slightly below average performance.

Also need to see what is that IP school's assessment. Some schools have GPA maximum at 4.5, some maximum at 4.0, some maximum is at 4.3.

And if I'm not mistaken, HCI & NYGH uses "MSG" (mean subject grade) and not GPA.
