Catholic High vs Maris Stella

Unlike entry to Primary Schools, admission into Secondary Schools is based on meritocracy. PSLE results are used as key admission criteria. Discuss everything related to PSLE and selection of Secondary Schools here.

Catholic High vs Maris Stella

DS achieved 254 and was from MSHS Pri. The boys are offered a scholarship to stay with MSHS Sec if they choose it as 1st choice.

With his T-score, I am seriously considering recommending Catholic High to him, so as to provide a sufficiently stimulating environment for his development.

The thing is, MSHS is just 0.5km away and we've been enjoying this proximity for all this time, and coupled with the $$, it is a really attractive choice. And it is familiar environment for DS.

We went to Catholic High open house and I liked the way the councillor expressed his love for his school and the spirit of the boys helping each other.

The other consideration is also if IP is really so important to consider for minimising the stress of having to manage performance at 'O' levels, so we may have to look at the VS/VJC alternative which might save this headache.

Of course, with CHS going IP soon, we thought it might be hopeful, but the councillor confidently said that DS will not be able to benefit from it during his time there.

I have a feeling he'll adjust well in CHS but he seems reluctant to leave the familiarity of MSHS.

Appreciate your views.

i remember there was this report in the straits times last year...the immigrant father from china is a manager in singapore...he said he cannot decide whether to put river valley high (his daughter choice) or rgs (his choice)...his daughter has high scores in psle...
then he asked his daughter why she wanted river valley high...her daughter said all her friends are going there....then he reacted very angrily and decided to put rgs for his daughter..
and in the ST report, he said proudly that his daughter is now doing very well and very happy in rgs...

actually i was quite puzzled by the ST report...seem to emphaize the fact that parents know best....but i thought should take the child's consideration as a factor too...

From my understanding, CHS is very academic orientated.

If the child prefers a more vibrant and stimulating environment, pick CHS. Personally, I will pick CHS.

hi all

revisiting this old thread as i have been thinking about the selection between these two schools for my going to primary school kids. i learnt that the cut off point for CHS is much higher than MSHS which i am concern if my kids can't make it in CHS. No point going into a very good school and going through the difficult times and find that one can't make it to the sec school. Yes, i am ks as i try to see as far i can as i unsure of my kids potential. I think it is only come PSLE result that i know to some degree of their potential.

anyone know if MSH still having special, express stream? i heard it has normal stream as well. How is the climate in the MSH. I have a different sensing between the two threads MSH and CHS in their respective school environment.

Any thoughts?

lchunleo: There is no more special/express stream in MSHS Sec. But neither do they have normal classes.

There is however a very big gap between the best class in Sec 1 - boys scoring in the range of the TS and the last class which comprises mostly the DSA and appeal cases. The peer influence is very great as I can see the boys in the best classes scoring way above the boys from my son's class in the SA1 (yes, he is in the worst class).

Fortunately, good teachers are also allocated to the worst class, I really can't find any fault with my son's teachers this year (as compared to his primary school teachers).
