Schools with caring/dedicated teachers

My ds is P5 & in a popular boys school now. Because of the school's brand name & consistently good PSLE results, the teachers in the school tend to be very result oriented.

My ds has told me many times that he does not enjoyed school cos his teachers will scold the class everyday for a variety of reasons. As a parent, there are some things that the teachers asked their students to do which I also don't agree with - They are made to rewrite the whole compo after teacher has marked it (to me, this is complete waste of time, considering they have a lot of homework to do everyday). When someone in the class who's expected to score well in the assessments but didn't, that person will get scolding from teacher too. For chinese orals, they are made to memorise long passages, word for word (even ds chinese tutor agree that this is ridiculous). It is little wonder why my ds dislikes his school. However, it's too late to transfer him out of the school now.

Since he will be going to a secondary school soon, I'd like to have gather feedback from parents about the teachers in the secondary schools that your children are attending. I think ds thrive better in a caring school environment & this will boost his interest in learning.

I think my son will cry everyday if his teachers are so ridiculous.
Talked to his kindy classmate's mum once. Her son is in a popular boys school. The daily homework is killing. The poor boy hates school. In his compos, he writes about his hatred.

My son will be going to secondary school next year. I hope he goes to one which has caring teachers and an equally caring environment.

Believe you can get a sense of what is the likely school's culture by attending the principal's speech and speaking to the students during the Open House.

Some of the questions I asked were:
- which is the primary school the child was from
- how many hours did the child used to study to obtain the necessary grades to get into the secondary school
- what is the homework load
- what time does he/she sleep
- how is he/she faring in the school
- what is the school's support structure to help them adept
- what is the quantity of homework/project work given
- what is the biggest difficulty encountered

DD has a history of acting up/melting down hence it is important for me that she goes to a school with a good match between ability and expectations. The above gives me a sense of what to expect though I find some of the answers from the answers given to be politically correct so I take it with a pinch of salt.
