Hi

I wonder which is better, IP-JC (eg RI, HCI, VS) and IP-non JC (eg DHS, RV, SJI)? For those with JC, at least there is an distinct transition from HS to JC, like moving to another location/buildings, new students from other schools joining (eg RI/RGS, HCI/NYGH and 'O' lvl) etc. They also have more students (1200 vs 450??), more resources/CCA, better facilities etc, more vibrant and interesting school life (although more competition)?? Whereas for DHS/RV, will it be abit boring studying with the same small batch of people for 6 years, I felt is not as interesting and vibrant as a full JC. Is it because of lesser student/talent that RV/DHS is rarely heard topping sports/cca/academic competition? Is there any different in the choices and availability of subject combination in 'A' level?

RV/DHS COP have been dropping for the past few years with more IP-JC school, does this trend indicate people prefer IP-JC rather than IP-non JC route?

How could it be boring when u will not be studying with the same batch of classmates when in yr 5 ??
The class allocation will depend on your yr 5 subj combo and GPA....
And for yr 5, pupils are allowed to re-select their CCA....there are diff CCAs avail for the senior high pupils (at least for DHS)..

I have no experience with an IP school and could not comment much on the diff. However, would like to point out that although the cop of dhs has in fact moderated over the past few years (2010 -2013) from 258 to 256, the cop for rvhs has improved from 251 to 256 over the same period. For dhs, i believe it is bcos of more ip schools in the east such as vs/cedar and tjc that has resulted in the cop moderation

That's true....

For DHS, for that particular yr when its COP began to experience a 1 pt drop.....
other IP or non IP schs also experienced the same...( almost across the board with some schs a few pts dropped)...
As for last yr....there are 2 new IP schs in the east , VS n TJC ...
Which give more options to those pupils residing in the East, besides DHS...

From PMs received enquiring from me abt DHS....
i notice that some parents utimately prefer to pick a single-gender sec sch over a co-ed sec sch for their children....
such as the new IP schs, Cedar Girls or VS...

I guess my question is whether there is something different or missing for those studying in a full JC and HS. I guess with a smaller cohort, it will definitely affect the school performance during competition with a JC and probably affect the variety of CCA or courses.

I mean if we have a choice, how these factors will affect people choices?

For Yr1 to Yr4, whether in IP-JC (e.g. HCI, RI, NYGH, RGS) or IP-non JC (e.g. DHS, RV), the size is about 400 to 450. The variety of CCA is also similar.

The advantage of small cohort size in Yr 5 & 6 is that closer attention can be given to each student.

I think CCA participation is more important than performance (and that is MOE's new PE direction), so size will help to have more talents, but different people weight it differently.

Some parents/students actually prefer co-ed that boy/girl school. A mix of ying and yang.

DHS and RV only has less than 10 years IP experience, but their A level results are remarkable and getting better.

For 2013, vjc is national champion for football (boys and girls), hockey (boys and girls), wushu (boys and girls), floorball (boys), golf (girls), sailing (girls) and top 4 for many other sports.

DHS and RV are always the top co-ed school and their excellent A-level results within short period of ip entry are a good testimonial. Also like NJC too.

In VJC, one can excel in a sport which he or she has never played before in seconday school.

Most student athletes would be more than happy to end their school sports season with one gold medal from their pet sport. Not Jarryl Chan.

Having played floorball since he was in Secondary 2, the Victoria Junior College student felt he was stagnating in the game.

Seeking a new challenge, Jarryl decided to take on hockey on top of his floorball commitments.

After slogging through both sports' training session, Jarryl's hard work paid off when he scored a personal double by helping VJC clinch the A Division titles for both stick sports - all while preparing for his A levels this year.

Despite his gruelling schedule to maintain his grades and sporting endeavours leaving him with just one rest day on Fridays, the 17-year-old has no regrets.

Jarryl told The New Paper: "I really lacked sleep. I had only maybe three to four hours per day.

"When I get home from training it was around 10 plus and I had to be up at 5am to get to school because I live in Sengkang.

"However, when I look back at my JC life 10 years down the road, I will not remember how much I've studied or how many As I got. I will think that I got the two gold medals for the school and myself.

"That's really special for me." It was definitely a special A Division hockey final on May 16 for Jarryl.

Equaliser

With defending champions Raffles Institution leading 1-0 at the Sengkang Hockey Centre, Jarryl scored a late equaliser for VJC to force extra time.

The game then went down to penalties, which saw the Victorians hold their nerve to triumph 3-2.

The result also gave the school a hockey double as the girls had won their earlier match against Anglo-Chinese Junior College 5-1.

Jarryl said: "The hockey final was a really special moment for me because, as the scorer, everyone will remember you and the goal came in the dying moments of the match.

"RI were favourites to win the championship and when we scored the equaliser, our coach told us that RI were worried because they had never been stretched so far before.

"He told us that, in penalties, RI would falter and lose. And true enough, they did."

Two weeks later, Jarryl, despite sporting a deep gash over his left eye from the semifinals, helped the VJC floorball team to a 6-2 win over Meridian Junior College to complete his personal double.

Najib Madina, VJC's teacher-in-charge of hockey, said: "Even though we knew he was a talented athlete, Jarryl, an excellent student, came to VJC purely on academic merit.

"I've only got the chance to interact with him this year, but his acumen as a sportsman is incredible.

"Our coach has never seen someone pick up hockey so quickly.

"While he has the composure and skill on the pitch, he is a humble, very nice and modest boy who got along with the hockey team really quickly."

With his school sports exploits now over, Jarryl will now turn his focus to his examinations.

As he is on the VJC's financial assistance scheme, the former Catholic High School student wants to repay his parents Charlie (a taxi driver) and Linda (works part-time) for their unwavering support.

"When I strive to do well in school and sports, I have this notion that I have to repay my parents next time because we are not very well to do," said Jarryl.

"I try my best not to buy my own equipment as I don't feel it's very fair for them because they work so hard to support my brother and me."
