For certain, I am not going to raise my kids so that I get to attend tuition!

Thought base on results/strengths and interest?

DD's selection was done online. You can only view the combinations you qualify so it is not that difficult. It is the better students who need to spend more time on it as they have more choices.

There are some stronger Express students who take F&N or D&T as their 9th subject. Contingent. Anything can happen in an exam and at least they have a back-up subject. I have checked around and the A is almost a given without too much effort on their part.

Not all schools offer Combined Science, hence weak students also need to take Pure Science. There're also schools which require students to take double Maths (compulsory). Eg. CHS.

If a student takes HCL, he'll sit for O Level CL in Sec-3 and O Level HCL in Sec-4. HCL & CL are considered as 2 subjects. Hence, it's not uncommon to hear students saying they take 9, or even 10, subjects.

Hi all, actually I chose based on the school's performance in the subjects. Do approach the schools for it, they usually have all the data on subject performance at national exams for their analysis.

Sec 3 (8 subjects) : Emaths, Amaths, Pure Chem, Pure Phy, Combined Humanities (SS/Hist), EL, MT, F&N

Just sharing some humble thoughts when choosing;
1) Combined Humanities: DS was deciding between SS + Geog or SS + History. Decided to go with SS + History because the school's o'levels grades for SS/Hist students were better than those SS/Geog. Also, looking at the exam paper format, both are similar in source-based and essay testing. So the skills they learn are transferable, whereas for Geog not so. Plus they have additional component to learn about fieldwork.

2) Electives: DS took Amaths. Since Maths has always been more on the weak side as compared to the other subjects, scoring around B3-B4. When he took Amaths, had to struggle with it, at MYE he scrapped with a pass. Spent a lot more time on this subject, tuition, practices, thus limiting his revision time for other subjects. And plus in sec 3, he assumed a leadership position in the CCA. Could see that he was suffering with Amaths. Discussed with his school teachers, allowed him to drop Amaths after Sec 3. Could spend more time on the other subjects, and saw improvement in the other subjects.

3) F&N: He could choose between Art / D&T / F&T / POA / CS. Decided on F&N as he loves food and has interest in it. Also decided on it as it seems that school is doing well with 50% distinction rate consecutively for 3 years straight. And not too bad, the report he did helped him to gain a lot of research skills, writing skills and till now i am still impressed he could do a 40 page report by himself. :salute: Scored A2 for it eventually.

Anyway, cut the story short. He's at NYJC now, in Science stream. Still coping well with H2 Maths despite not taking Amaths. But was glad he did drop in sec 3, definitely did contribute to his improvement in other subjects and a low L1R5.

Hi kimberchin,
Congratulation to your ds for making it to nyjc and coping well with H2 Maths. He must have achieved an impressive raw L1R5 in order for NYJC to make an exception for him to take H2 Maths without A. Maths. From the nyjc website http://nanyangjc.moe.edu.sg/prospective ... dy-with-us, O Level additional mathematics is a pre-requisite to offer H2 Maths.

I did a check with other JCs' website and found that majority have similar requirement such as SRJC, ‘O’ Level Math (C6 or better) and ‘O’ Level A. Math (C6 or better) is stated as the pre-requisite to offer H2 Maths.
http://srjc.moe.edu.sg/qql/slot/u678/Jo ... 202016.pdf

In fact HCI requires her students to obtain at least a B3 in both E Maths and A Maths in the O Level in order to be offered H2 Maths, please refer to the below 2016 document. http://www.hci.edu.sg/uploadfile/admiss ... an2016.pdf
Apparently, this attainment of at least a B3 in A. Maths pre-requisite is not unique to HCI as SAJC also has a similar requirement.
http://standrewsjc.moe.edu.sg/qql/slot/ ... isites.pdf

On the other hand, IJC does allow students with "At least A2 in Elementary Mathematics AND L1R5 aggregate score (excludes bonus points) of 16 or less" to take H2 Maths.
http://innovajc.moe.edu.sg/qql/slot/u18 ... nation.pdf

Thus, I feel that if a student intends to take H2 Maths at A Level, he/ she should strive to take A. Maths at the O Level.
