Hi everybody,

Greetings! I've a question and need some assistance from knowledgeable parents here. Kindly assist if you do know.

Here's the question...

AS (Autonomous School) and IS (Independent Sch) - How do they differ in various aspects and in fees.

I've been trying to find out some fees information when i was told by some parents whose kids are in a school of which will be accorded AS in year 2010, January has implemented a fee of $200 +/- per month.

Such a fee, i thot is only applicable to IS school of which they are given the liberty to implement their own scale of fees but does an AS have such a liberty too?

Kindly assist.

If I recall correctly, Autonomous schools fees is decided by MOE. It's slightly higher than normal school fees. My sis is in PLMGS(S) and if I'm not wrong, she pays around $30+ in school fees via Edusave monthly.

Independant schools usually charge around $200 monthly (based on what i know when I was teaching in an independant school). Fees can be paid by Edusave, but how much money can a child have in their Edusave when govt only tops up with few hundred per year & there are so many other enrichments & camps to pay for!

To confirm the schools fees for Autonomous schools, check here: http://www.moe.gov.sg/education/secondary/

In terms of OTHER ASPECTS, Autonomous schools are still govt schools although the schools have more funding & more programmes for the kids. They are still subjected to MOE's syllabus.

Independant schools do not need to get budget approval & such from MOE. They have the autonomy to decide on curriculum (thus the IB diploma programs available).

Teaching style may also defer depending on the school's focus. It's better to know what your child wants & enjoys if budget is not a problem.

Thank you very much for the reply.

A school which will be accorded AS next yr sending letter to existing students of the fees to be raised to $200 =/-, my doubt is..... not unless u're an IS else ur fees should be in accordance to MOE scale and plus the Autonomous fee of upto $18.

Is there a mistake in your opinion?

I think the school either made or mistake on the fees or on the status. Can PM me which school is this? I can help you check on Monday.
