Earlier, many here were speculating that MOE might take this chance to remove affiliation or maybe standardize all the affiliated schools to give discount like 2 points etc.
Which is never going to happen.

Say I told you so.

Minimum for IP is 8 as many have predicted.
Min AL9 to do IP. Probably last few seats available at TJC and RVHS for AL9 students to ballot.
For RVHS, probably only HCL students need apply for the last few seats.

I think the part in bold makes it clear they did not just translate the scores of those students that made it under t-score S1 posting.

The indicative PSLE Score ranges for the individual schools were simulated using
the 2020 P6 cohort’s PSLE results and school choices.
• MOE first simulated each student’s individual subject score in AL terms,
based on their raw subject scores.
• Then, we added the AL scores for each PSLE subject to form a student’s total
PSLE Score.
Using these simulated PSLE Scores and students’ school choices from 2020,
MOE simulated their posting outcomes based on the new S1 Posting System
and its tie-breakers
(in the order of Citizenship, Choice order of Schools and
Computerised Balloting).
The indicative PSLE Score ranges for individual secondary schools were then
generated based on the PSLE Scores of the first student and the last student
who would have been posted into the school under the simulation

This is also what I understood. The AL range given is simulated, not the actual posting outcome.

MOE first convert all ~40,000 results into AL based on raw scores by subjects.

Then the posting is simulated based on the choices made by all ~40,000 students.

Hence, these AL ranges based on 2020 PSLE results are indicative only. Not actual.

Next year's shld be more reflective based on actual choices made by AL banding.

My agaration:

AL17 - 220
AL13 - 235
AL12 - 237-240
AL9 - 247-249
AL8 - 250-256
AL7 - 257-260
AL6 - 261

Not so sure why AL8 is such a big range, but I saw NYGH affiliate 250 is AL8, so is DHS 256 = AL8.

Because these ranges are not based on actual posting outcomes but simulated.

Hence AL COP may not be directly converted to 2020 Tscore COP. Is only indicative.

With AL scores, decisions on choices of schools may not be the same as the choices made in old system because in old system, the order of choices is not taken into account.

Not that many, I think only one person was harping on the 2 points discount and probably one or two more hoping it will be removed..

I think the key phrase from the MOE head is “Let us remind ourselves again that the PSLE score ranges have always served only as a guide for students and their parents to shortlist secondary schools.”

They just made it harder for parents who need a goal post. So I say the crowding of top students at the top schools will not change, and I am sure MOE is also waiting to see how actual choices play out against their simulation at the end of this year. Maybe nothing will change at the top, which means this new system doesn't really change things until schools themselves really differentiate among themselves.

I think the graphic with the islandwide breakdown across 4 regions is silly.

What was surprising about the outcome of the simulation and its COP may be that citizenship would have played a greater card in the 2020 cohort for some students who didn't get in to their choice schools and are left scratching their heads when they see how a "worse" score could have gotten them in now based on the AL ranges published today.

Given that citizenship criteria only kicks in when there’s a tie, I doubt it plays a big role in the 2020 cohort.

The “worst” score is simply a reflection of how the points compute in the two different system:

1. A raw score of 75, 75, 90, and 90 for E, C, M and S respectively will yield exactly the same result as 90, 90, 75 and 75 in the AL environment. However, as each subject t-score is calculated separately before being averaged to give you the final t-score, the two set of data will yield wildly different results in the old t-score environment.

2. A 100, 100, 100 and 70 could actually yield you a very good t-score but in the AL environment, you are pretty much screwed and will end up with a “worst” score. T-score is an average of 4 subject t-scores (can be pulled up or saved by a strong subject), but AL score is an addition of 4 subject t-scores (there’s no running or hiding from a weak subject).

3. In the old environment, a 100 is significantly different from a 90 whereas in the new environment, a 90 is no different from a 100.
