Hi,

I am checking out for my son with learning disabilities.

What will be the difference between switching to Foundation level and exemption of MT?

One of the differences I can think of is that exemption will need to rely on his peers for his result whereas he will use his own score for foundation?

Not all kids weak in MTL are able to get exemption. In fact, it is common for those who get AL1 in English are weaker in MTL. The average MTL grade of those who get AL1 for EMS will probably be around AL3/4. By giving AL1/2 to those who are exempted from MTL, might be unfair to those kids who sit for all 4 subjects.

Actually, MTL exemption is for kids who have learning disabilities. Some parents are trying to apply exemption for kids who are weak in MTL inorder to get into better schools. However, parents must not forget that their kids are expected to handle an additional 4 more subjects in secondary school. How are they going to cope if they can't even handle 4 subjects in primary school?

I am not sure about the difference but know now it's very difficult to get exemption. It seems like the child must fail almost all or all subjects or someone must be suicidal before exemption can be considered.

A friend went through close to two years of application and appeals after spending a lot on pte psychologists' reports on child's learning disabilities (ADHD or ADD + dyslexia) before finally granted exemption.

Actually I am in a dilemma to get exemption for MT for ds. On one hand, he is struggling with Chinese but on the other hand I feel that it's important to know Chinese. I just changed the Chinese tutor for him and hopefully this tutor can instil some interest in him.

I don't know how old your child is, but perhaps applying to do Foundation (if in Pr school) or Syllabus B (if in sec school), may be an option? Perhaps it may be easier to get approval, and your son can still learn some MT.

Giggler1, how old is your child? If not P6, still got chance to instill interest by watching some chinese drama or show during the holidays. Perhaps read the Chinese books together.

With this new system, the first choice plays a key factor in the system assuming both students achieve same AL4 and are singaporean. As Nanyang is affiliated, the secondary school will retain most slots for its affiliated primary school. Thus more inclined to put RGS as first choice. Any thoughts?

With AL4 and HCL distinction, I believe the student can get into any top girl school if she puts it as her 1st choice. Balloting is likely to start for those at AL6 onwards.

Example:
Assuming that both schools have some left over vacancies, say last 20 places for AL6 students to ballot for:

RGS (non-SAP):
With or without HCL, all the 6pointers who applied for RGS as 1st choice, will ballot for the remaining 20 seats. Maybe a few hundred students balloting for last 20 seats?

NYGH (SAP):
AL6 with distinction in HCL will have priority, any balance will be allocated to AL6 with Merit in HCL then whatever places remaining will go to AL6 with pass in HCL.

If there are 21 AL6 with HCL Dist, then the 21 students will ballot for the last 20 places. No place will be leftover for AL6 even for those with Merit for HCL.
