Creating this new thread upon the request of some parents.

For parents with kids taking PSLE in 2021 and are considering DSA, this may be a good time for you to post your queries here while it is still fresh in the memory for those involved in the current DSA exercise.

All the best! :rahrah:

I’m not sure if next year the secondary school Open Houses will be online, virtual, e-version like this year.

If they are, I think it helps to ask the school reps specifically, how many places are available (usually) for the DSA domain that you’re interested in. The online medium makes it slightly easier to ask such qns (and have it answered) without having to Q up to meet a teacher/student rep at a physical open house.

Eg. When I found out that only a very tiny number (literally a handful, max) are available, I know how to temper my expectations already.

Every school is different in terms of selection criteria. It is advisable to visit the Open Houses of the secondary schools your child is keen to DSA next year.

In general, students who want to DSA via Academic should have a strong interest and aptitude in the Domain.

If the child has done well in a popular competition such as Singapore Primary Science Olympiad (by NUS High), the chance of a successful DSA is high. Secondary school usually conduct its own selection tests (and interviews) for shortlisted candidates.

Some secondary schools list down their criteria in their DSA websites. For eg. (Science Domain),

HCI (2019)
Candidates
- with outstanding achievements in Science-related competitions such as ICAS, Tan Kah Kee Young Inventors’ Award, Future Problem Solving Competition, Odyssey of the Mind, etc,
- with the necessary foundational knowledge, possess logical thinking and reasoning of science and engineering
concepts, and
- show tenacity and ingenuity in their search for solutions to problems

RGS (2020)
• Critical thinking
• Application skills
• Analysis & evaluation skills
• Communication skills
• Social-emotional competencies

RI (2020)
You must demonstrate interest and talent in Science beyond the abilities of children in your age group, and/or have a history of consistently high academic achievement.

SCGS (2020)
In past DSA exercises, shortlisted candidates typically attained significant achievements in projects/activities/competitions at national/international levels in the area of science and technology. Candidates should have an innate curiosity about the natural world, keen interest and disposition in pursuit of scientific disciplines.

Do visit the websites of the secondary schools you are keen in to find out more.

All the best to your child!

My DD got a CO for badminton and here's her profile for reference.

1. DD represented in school team but her school team did not do well in zonal competition. One good thing was her school played against the primary school which was affiliated to the secondary school that offered her DSA. She won in the game.

2. Apart from participating in inter-school competition, i also signed up 3 external competitions during her P5. She did not win any medal in those 3 competitions, just to gain experience only.

3. She is also vice captain in the CCA badminton and hold other captains responsibility in the school

Hope this is helpful for you !
