DSA 2021

Unlike entry to Primary Schools, admission into Secondary Schools is based on meritocracy. PSLE results are used as key admission criteria. Discuss everything related to PSLE and selection of Secondary Schools here.

Thanks in advanced for sharing.

There are only 4 schools that offer DSA via RG -
CHIJ TP, PLMGS, SNGS and RGS. There aren’t really many choices to explore, just pick your favorite.

Hi, would like to find out, if ever there is such a list that tabulate the number of intake from respective schools on DSA?
Any references we can based on?
Non-IP Schools – up to 20%

Specialised Independent Schools (viz. NUS High School, School of the Arts, School of Science and Technology) have full discretion in admissions, and take in 100% of their students through the DSA.

IP Schools that offer the Integrated Programme (IP) have full discretion when admitting students to the IP, although the actual proportion admitted through the DSA varies from school to school.

On average, IP schools admit 30% of their Sec One cohort via DSA.

Some IP schools will reveal the % of their intake during open-house or via their DSA websites. E.g., for 2020 DSA

ACSI
up to 20% of our Express Programme Intake
30% - 35% of our Integrated Programme (IP) Intake

NJC
25-30% of the cohort via DSA over the last 5 years

RI
I read somewhere that it was 30% of intake for 2019 DSA
All MOE schools must follow MOE rule. No MOE school is an exception.
Every MOE IP school have max 30% of intakes according to MOE rule but no school will hit their max because they need to reserve some few empty slots maybe 6 seats for special cases. When these empty slots are not taken up, then they will be given to waiting list. Most of the time the empty slots will be taken up more than half.

My DD got a CO for badminton and here's her profile for reference.

1. DD represented in school team but her school team did not do well in zonal competition. One good thing was her school played against the primary school which was affiliated to the secondary school that offered her DSA. She won in the game.

2. Apart from participating in inter-school competition, i also signed up 3 external competitions during her P5. She did not win any medal in those 3 competitions, just to gain experience only.

3. She is also vice captain in the CCA badminton and hold other captains responsibility in the school

Hope this is helpful for you !

Thanks so much for sharing your experience and congrats on the confirmed offer!

Actually my son is the Same situation as your girl. But I'm still hesitant on dsa. Will think more abt it after sa2 results
Actually, one key bit of info missing here is - which school are you aiming for?

There are some schools which are badminton powerhouses and having those listed credentials may not get you through the door. On the other hand, there are definitely schools which will invite the applicant for trials, interviews and offer CO/WL.

Another point to consider, also related to which school. What is the estimated T-score vs the schools’ COP. If it is too far off, many of the top academic schools may not want to get in a student who may struggle subsequently due to the rigors of the academic requirements. It would be potentially doing a disservice to the student too.
Schools will still invite students for an interview when they are unsure of these students potentials.
Although many children are below the level, this does not stop many greedy parents who have too much ego mindset in Singapore and the rest of the advance countries. These parents always still want to try although their children are unable to achieve the targets. I saw too many ignorant parents still say no harm to try, without actually know the harms and negative impacts it brought in the future. This is the same as a person who eats rubbish junk food and only stops when he is dying.

Every year's DSA, the top 10 schools have more than 10 times applications, in other words, more than 10 applications competing to 1 seat only. While the second top 10 schools have almost the same amount, 8-10 to 1 seat. The top 5 schools are very scary because they can hit a record high 20 to 1 seat!
Sadly how many students can really achieve their target when they are in these top schools? The real fact is much worse than you can imagine. I know some top students in top primary schools even top no 1 in their cohorts can drop to become just a normal average student in these schools.

The top schools had many times emphasized that they are not an art or sports school so do not expect them to concentrate on that path. So they still need your child to be more academic than excel in CCA. They also had repeated ask parents to consider before applying to their schools because their requirement of high academic expectations will later force your child out to another school. I had seen many top GEP students were kicked out at IP year 4.

Stresses in not good because they will burden and make things worse for the students to progress. So members of KSP, please consider carefully before you destroy your loves ones with parent ego. If you think your child is really too good, then apply for it but bear in mind of the risk and impacts. These are the only advice I can give and the decisions are still in your own hands. I hope this can help parents who are still indecisive.

Hi Nope,

don't mind,
can explain the rationale behind, why must "reserve 6 seats for special cases " ?

Can give an example of special cases ? Thank you

The official MOE policy is IP schools can offer up to 50% of its IP places during DSA phase (all other secondary schools can offer up to 20% of its places during DSA phase).

Some IP schools are known to exceed 30% (although few are likely to come close to 50%).

coast summary is pretty much correct.

Anyone with experience and advice to share on DSA via Shooting Sports? What kind of shooting does it refer to? Air rifle or air pistol and where to take up such sports if not offered in the primary school? My boy is very keen. What are the schools that are good to explore in this area?

I happen to pass by Chong Pang CC at Yishun just now and saw the below banner on DSA art portfolio preparation for SOTA. Pasting here in case anyone interested. I am in no way related to them though and won’t know if they are indeed good.
