Thinking of changing my main door lock set to a digital one. Anyone with kids who use their thumbprints to unlock main door successfully? What age are your kids?

Cos I heard that such thumbprint locks cannot detect younger kids’ thumbprints (just like how the new biometric passports for age <12? do not have thumbprint data saved into them as their finger skin is still forming). Is that true? Or has the technology improved in recent years?

Samsung or Yale, which one have you tried and which is more reliable?

Just my luddite-ness - I don't really trust all this electronic stuff! But I have several younger friends who do use them, although I don't know the brands they use. Just a few things to note when you buy - check how to override it if something goes wrong, or the battery runs out. Have a manual fallback to open/close the door if possible.

I have a friend who as been locked inside her flat twice! She had to call her husband back home to open the door from outside. Another friend wasn't able to shut her front door when the lock failed, and they had to stay home until they got a locksmith to come (they were actually on their way out).

The renter condo that I stayed in previously had an old digital lock set. The fingerprint detector was bad (could not detect wet fingers after swim & could not detect my mum’s too dry hands either). The batteries did not give warning prior to running low, so we had to keep a physical key on hand for such situations. I think the newer versions all have some sort of backup system (early low battery warning, manual key etc) so that’s not a problem.

It helps to have a metal gate I think! Our manual door lock set has given way (cannot turn at all). We happen to have a metal gate that can be padlocked so that provides security until we get a new lock. Will probably change the entire main door too since it’s 20+ years old. Many of our neighbors do not have the metal gate anymore (threw them away during renovation cos too ugly).

My young friends use digital locks on the gate too! That's why they get stuck when that won't unlock or lock.

We have been using digital lock for the last 7 years since DS in sec 1. The lock can recognise his finger prints as he grows over the years. No issue. We use Samsung.

I lost my finger print after winter holiday few years back and custom seems to have put a note in the system. If no such issue then should be ok. We got locked out once coz battery too low. Not sure if there is any digital one with emergency key like the car key.

Yesterday we had our new main door installed. Fire-rated doors are not cheap at all. But happy to invest this money cos the old colour was such an eyesore, totally out of sync with our Scandi design theme. Now that it’s seamless, hopefully can sell our unit at a better price

Have been using samsung digital door lock for the past 10 years, came with physical keys, card keys and of course pin-enabled password. I don't carry keys anymore so will just use my muscle memory to key in the password. My kids use card key. My hubs take the physical key. So far ok. There is usually a warning when batt is low. Worse come to worse, someone will carry the physical key around. Its really v convenient.

In the midst of meeting and discussing with various IDs. Think finding one who can get your ideas, can project manage well and have access to good contractors that have quality workmanship is a hit and miss thing also.

This is such a daunting project.

Aside from finding a suitable ID, I will have to look for temp accommodation for the duration of the reno which could take up to 4mths. Not to mention all the packing and storing that have to be done. I have half a mind to look for a new place instead of renovating our current.

Any good recommendation or suggestion for ID as well as for short term lease that can accommodate 4 persons and a dog?

HDB leases are min. 6mths. And most owners (private or HDB) are unlikely to want to rent for just 4 mths. Maybe you can try to rent for 6 mths, which will also take the pressure off if there are delays?
