RATS!!!!

In the past 2 years, we have trapped at least 10 rats at our estate.

When you live on your own landed property, maybe, you might encounter the occasional rat problems.

BUT I LIVE IN A MANAGED ESTATE!!!!

When my helper first suspected there were rats in our unit, we did not quite believe her. Told her maybe it was squirrels. But we found gnaw marks on our loaf of bread and pack of sugar as well as the basket holding some condiments. We set up some rat glue traps and shockingly, we caught 2. Showed them the to estate manager and he said this is the first time he received a report and ok he will get the pest control in. A month later, we saw signs of more rats, and a neighbour trapped 1 as well. We spoke to our neighbours and realised that this problem has been on-going and some of them even invested in cages to trap rats.

It has been 2 odd years since the first incident and the problem keeps recurring.

I am just wondering, is it that difficult to get rid of rats? I had some problem at my work place which is located at a hdb void deck. Called the town council and ever since, no problems. If HDB with the rubbish chute and huge grounds plus coffee shop and a small stretch of market, can get the problem under control, one would think that it should be easier to manage in a private estate right!?

Short of calling NEA I wonder if there is any other channel for escalating this case.

Did the pest control come? They need to find the nest. If the management is trying to be cheap or negligent, I'm sure you can call the relevant authorities to look into this. If the problem is very persistent, there may be something that needs to be done in the way rubbish is collected and dealt with within the estate. You may have to find the entry point into your apartment and seal that up.

We have the very occasional rats in our estate too, but the rats don't usually go into people's units. We even have an owl and the occasional snakes, so it's like a complete food chain. The gardeners know where the rat nest is (and where the owl lives), but since no one complained, and it's not a big problem, everything is just left as it is.

I think NEA should be notified. The food sources and nests (of rats) must be removed.

Tell management they will have to foot Pest control Bill if they do not take action by engaging one. Take photos and inform NEA a good idea too.. ..

My mum stays in Bukit Merarh. The rat can travel up to 22 story, can you imagine? They can travel through the water pipe also.

I stay in Tampines, new estate, also have rats. The rat can take lift. One day when I was waiting the lift and the door open. I scream when I saw the mother (big more than 30 cm) rat and the baby rat. I complain to the respectively party. But no use. Last time, I only see them in the night, but recently, the rats can be seen in the morning also.

The condo near by also have dead rat in the swimming pool.

I am living on a ground floor unit with a back yard and a garden. So quite impossible to seal off all entry points. Neighbours have recounted incidents of rats wondering into their living rooms from the garden. Whenever we spot and rats on the grounds we will alert the management. As for disposal of garbage, the estate is using a pneumatic garbage disposal system which rightfully means once in the chute, the rubbish should be transported to a collection area away from the residential units.

Each time they will bring in the pest control to find the nests and put out the baits. But this problem keeps recurring. What pisses me off more is the manager can say it is a problem that people living on the ground floor will encounter. My friends living in landed properties do not have that problem. My office on a ground floor does not have that problem. My grandma who used to live on a groundfloor unit of a HDB did not have that problem. So I don't buy this having to bear with such things when living on a ground floor unit.

I seriously wonder if this rat issue really cannot be erradicated or is the management and the pest control company engaged doing a piss poor job.

mine is a ground floor unit too with a yard grill.

saw a baby rat about 1 month ago at the foot of my stairs and luckily the security guard caught it. report to mgt and the pest control guys came. not seen one anymore.

my estate is small so easy to spot these pests. but next to mine is a bigger estate with a supermarket so i think the rat could have come from there.

i think the best thing to prevent rats, roaches and lizards from entering the house is to put those mosquito nets on windows and door gates. so you can have ventilation and yet no fear of these pests (unless it gets in via the floor trap which once again i put a net over it).

if you know or suspect it could be the neighbouring condo/house problem, can get let them know of it.

otherwise call town council or shoot it to the mp (but dont know if the mp is like some others who like and repsonse to it)
