Dun get sth that is way above your child's ability, can be quite discouraging.

There are some assessment books that hv graded level exercises. I think these are good to get.

I used:

1. SAP COmprehension Fast Forward workbook 3. The MCQ, OE come in 3 levels - Basic, Intermediate and Advanced.

2. Longman Synthesis & Transformation Pri 3. I like this- detailed explanation in simple terms. My child can revise on his own.

3. EPH Problem solving processes Pri 3 by Fabian Ng. My child can review the many examples on his own before attempting the qns.

Hi Jennifer,

Thanks for your recommendation. :salute: I'll go check them out at the book stores. By the way, what do you think of Andrew Er Maths assessment books? I heard a lot but there are so many different books he has and I don't know which is good. Also, do you have any recommendation for Science and Higher Chinese? :?

Thanks & Regards,

Andrew Er's has at least one for above avg children and one for avg children.

So far, how has your child fared in the individual sections of a typical test paper - MCQ, section B (short qns) and section C (Problem sums)?

I find Fabian Ng's very good for section B and section C. As my child is quite good in MCQ, I did not get any assessments that hv MCQ qn since it is very unlikely he has time to do all sections and unlikely he enjoys doing MCQ. So we focus on section B and section C. I also bou the Maths Olympiad books to teach him the non-routine qn in section B.

So it really depends on your child's strength, whether a topical assessment book or a challenging one suits him.

For HCL, we are using EPH (blue copy) comprehension. My child also attends tuition.

For Sci, we are using Lower Block 3in1 Sci by Janet Sim.

Hi Jennifer,

Thanks for your reply.

My boy is slightly above average. Most of the time, he scored well in MCQ but when it come to section B & C, carelessness is his weakness. My DH and I feel that it may be because his attention span is rather short. The trend is always first 20 questions all correct and then mistakes started to kick in after. Haiz .... So not sure if topical suits him better or challenging ones ? Sometimes, he gave up altogether when encountering challenging questions. Will going through Olympia Maths with him helps him in handling tough questions ?

Appreciate your advice.

Regards, :thankyou:

At least two members in our Pei Hwa sch thread shared with us that the way to hv less careless mistakes is to re-do the questions again, not just flipping through the test papers. Maybe u can suggest this to your child?

My elder boy is an above avg pupil. Tons of careless mistakes too. I remembered I bou Andrew Er's and made him do from page 1 to last page, all sections. In the end, carelessness was not "cured" either  So drilling might not work for some types of children  Now he is in sec 1, more matured n careful now.

My P3 boy was very careless in the past, underachieving in terms of marks. In the end, I threatened to cane him for every careless mistakes he made. This SA2, he has no careless mistakes, only 1 really dunno how to do, 1 very tricky/badly set qn, 1 eye sight problem

Think it is different strokes for different folks :D

Could it be he is tired?

If my P3 boy does not take the afternoon nap, it is very difficult to get anything learnt. This year, I made him go to bed by 9.20pm during the exam period.

Popular Bookstore 20% discount voucher is not out yet. Do take time to window shop first.

I was at Popular this evening, wow so many types of Maths assessment books.

Saw a P3/4 Science 3 in 1 Teachers' Circle by Joshua Lim & Julia Chan. Inside has qns on graphs n more on those Yes/No flowchart qns. The one I have by Janet Sim does not hv sufficient qns in this aspect, my boy did not so well for such type of qns. Will be buying this soon.
