Can anyone help with this question? -- The total mass of 3 big sacks of rice is the same as the total mass of 5 small sacks of rice. A big sack of rice is 2.2kg heavier than a small sack of rice. What is the mass of 5 small sacks of rice?

tia :-)
Don't have paper with me now so can only explain...

( u --> mass of small sack )

3u + 6.6 = 5u
2u--> 6.6
1u = 3.3
5u --> 5*3.3= __kg

In a basket, there are some oranges and apples. 2/7 of the apples is equal to 3/4 of the oranges. If there are 260 more apples than oranges, how many apples and oranges are there in the basket?

TIA!

By algebra:
2/7 A = 3/4 O
O = 2/7 * 4/3 A = 8/21 A
A - 8/21 A = 260
13/21 A = 260
A = 420
O = 8/21 A = 160

Someone else can do the model :)

Not easy, my P4 girl also can't solve it on her own.

Another way is by using common multiples.

Since 2A is equal to 3O, the lowest common multiple is 6.

2/7 A is also 6/21 A, ie, 6U out of 21U.

If 3/4 of O is 6U, then O is 8U.

21U-8U = 260
U = 20

Apple = 21u = 420
Orange = 8u = 160

This is a very common sum and it is not difficult. The trick is to make the 2 numerators the same.
2/7 = 6/21 of the apples is equal to 3/4= 6/8 of the oranges.

X X X X X X x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x - apples
X X X X X X x x - oranges

therefore (15-2) units =260
13 units =260
1 unit = 20
Apples =21 units =420
Oranges =8 units =160
