Anyone can help above question? I can't get a whole number answer? Thanks.
Initial marbles (5u):
R: u-u-u
B: u-u
After adding:
R: u-u-u-4 ---> 2 parts => 1 part -> (3u+4)/2
B: u-u-20 ---->3 parts => 1 part -> (2u+20)/3

Equating them,
6 x (3u+4)/2 = 6 x(2u+20)/3
9u +12 = 4u + 40
5u = 28
u = 28/5

Initial marbles ->5u -> 5 x 28/5 = 28 marbles.

Note: If u is not a whole number, don't worry about it too soon...work until the last step, as long as still a whole number, it is fine cos marbles cannot have fractions. This is the trick in this question, not all "u" are whole numbers though typically they are.

But this is not a good question because once you apply to individual colour marbles, you get fractions. They should use pizzas or cakes to be more logical.

hi, please help:
Mrs Tan bought a tin of biscuits.
Her son filled his lunch box with 1/5 of the biscuits and took an additional 5 biscuits for his best friend.
Her daughter filled her lunch box with 1/5 of the remaining biscuits and packed another 10 biscuits for her friends.
There were 18 biscuits left.
a) How many biscuits did Mrs Tan’s daughter take for herself and her friends?
b) How many biscuits were there at first?

This question really crack my head. Please help.

There were 40 more boys than girls at a gathering. After 3/4 of the boys and 3/5 of the girls left the gathering, there were 8 more girls than boys remaining behind. How many boys were there at first?

LCM of 4 & 5 is 20

Beginning
Boys = 20U + 40
Girls = 20U

After
Boys = 5U + 10 (15U + 30 left)
Girls = 8U (12U left)

Therefore

8U - 8 = 5U + 10 ...solve for U

20U + 40 = 160

Please help with this !

At first, there were 4/5 as many boys as girls on the bus. Then 1 boy alighted from the bus and 1 girl boarded the bus. Now, there were 5/7 as many boys as girls on the bus. Find the number of boys and the number of girls on the bus now.

Thank you.

B:G:Total = > 4:5 : 9

After one boy alight and one girl boarded
B:G: Total => 5:7:12

The total in the beginning and end doesn't change, hence we can common multiple the total. LCM for 9 and 12 => 36

Beginning => B:G :Total => 16:20:36
End => B:G:Total => 15:21:36

Change is 1u from (16u-15u) or (21u-20u) and 1u = 1 person.

In the end ,
Boys=15u=15
Girls=21u=21
