Pls help on this. Thanks.
A farmer had a total of 820 ducks and chickens at first.
He sold 5/9 of the number of ducks and bought another 40 chickens.
The number of ducks he had left after that was 3/4 of the total number of the chickens he had.
How many chickens did the farmer have at first?

I would solve the above question as follows :
At first :

ducks ------- 9u

chickens ------- 9p

9u + 9p ------- 820

27u + 27p -------- 820 x 3 = 2460

At end :

ducks : 9u - 5u = 4u

chickens : 9p + 40

4u/(9p + 40) = 3/4

16u ------- 27p + 120

43u -------- 2580

1u -------- 2580/43 = 60

9u ------- 60 x 9 = 540

820 - 540 = 280

Ans : 280 chickens.

Hi I need help with this sum... TIA!!

Mr Tan paid $3504 for some books and files. He bought 80 more files than books.
A book cost $9.40 and a file cost $6.60. How many files did he buy?

80 files will cost $6.60 X 80 = $528

For equal number of books and files, they will cost $3504 - $528 = $2976
One set of a book and a file will cost $9.40+$6.60 = $16
Therefore number of sets to make $2976 will be = $2976/$16 = 186 sets of one book and one file

There will be 186 books. And files will be 186+80 = 266#

Subtract the cost of the 80 files from the total paid --> 2976 (now this amount includes equal number of files and books)

Each set of 1 file + 1 book --> 16

2976 / 16 --> 186

Therefore he bought 266 (186+80)files
