From Rosyth SA1 2013 Maths - Joy Spent 3/4 of her money on 3 blouses and Grace spent 4/9 of her money on 2 skirts. They were each left with an equal amount of money. One blouse cost $9 more than one skirt. How much money did they have altogether at first?

Hi fire_fly

Good Evening.

A neat way is to use MD.

Draw a long box and divide into 4 equal parts to show Joy’s money.

Shade 3 parts to show amount spent on 3 blouses with 1 part left.

Draw a long box and divide into 9 parts to show Grace’s money.

Shade 4 units to show amount spent on 2 skirts with 5 units left.

1 part is equal to 5 units, since they were each left with an equal amount of money.

For Joy
3 blouses ----- 15 units, left ----- 5 units, this gives 1 blouse ----- 5 units

For Grace
2 skirts ----- 4 units, left ----- 5 units, this gives 1 skirt ----- 2 units

One blouse cost $9 more than one skirt.

5 – 2 ----- 3

3 units ----- $9

1 unit ----- $3

Total amount of money at first ----- 29 units ----- $87

Hope this helps.

Best wishes

Good Evening.

When Le Tian have 1 wrong answer, he would lost 5 points (3+2).

----- 3 points for losing the chance to score 3 points for a right answer and 2 points for deduction.

Suppose he answered all the questions correctly, he would have scored a total of 105 (35*3)

Difference in marks ----- 105 – 65 ----- 40

Number of wrong answers ----- 40/5 ----- 8

Number of correct answers ----- 27 (35 - 8)

Hope this helps.

Best wishes

Gina went shopping at a XYZ department store. She spent 1/5 of her money on an electric oven and $786 on a washing machine. Later, she spent 1/8 of her remaining amount on a refrigerator. If the amount of money left was $68.35 more than half of the amount she had at first, how much money did Gina have at first?

Please help :boogie: :frustrated:

Hi COOKIE64,

Let's try; one possible method:

Look at the two denominators: 5 and 8.
5 x 8 = 40

Let Gina have 40 units (or 40 u) of money at first.

She spent 1/5 of her money on an electric oven
She spent 8 u on an electric oven.
She had 32 u left.

She spent $786 on a washing machine.
She had (32 u - $786) left.

Later, she spent 1/8 of her remaining amount on a refrigerator.
She spent 1/8 x (32 u - $786) on a refrigerator.
She spent (4 u - $98.25) on a refrigerator.

(32 u - $786) - (4 u - $98.25) = (28 u - $687.75)

She had (28 u - $687.75) left.

The amount of money left was $68.35 more than half of the amount she had at first

(28 u - $687.75) left → (1/2 x 40 u) + $68.35
28 u - $687.75 → 20 u + $68.35
8 u - $687.75 → $68.35
8 u → $756.10

40 u → 5 x $756.10 = $3780.50

Gina had $3780.50 at first.

Hope this helps.

Cheers
