HOw many pens did Cat buy?

I used Units X Value method but couldn't solve it.

D scored the highest and B scored the lowest.
When any 3 of their marks are used, an average of 64, 62, 68 and 76 are obtained.
Find the total score of A and C.
Grand Total -> 270
ACD -> 76 x 3 = 228 (since this is the highest average, so the lowest score B must have been excluded)
B -> 270 - 228 = 42

ACB -> 62 x 3 = 186

AC -> 186 - 42 = 144

After that, the number of sweets and chocolates Tim had were in the ratio of 1:7 and the number of sweets and chocolates John had were in the ratio 1:4.
How many sweets did John buy?

Thank you BigDevil.
How about this one?

Michael gets $2.50 more daily allowance than Lionel. Each of them spends $4.40 a day and saves the rest. After some days, Michael saved $99 and Lionel saved $61.50. How much daily allowance does Michael get?

Ans :
Michael saves $2.5 more than Lionel per day.
To find out number of days to save $99 & $61.50 -> (99 - 61.50) / 2.5 --> takes 15 days
Michael saves each day -> 99 / 15 = 6.6
Allowance Michael gets -> 6.6 + 4.4 = 11

Hope it helps.

Hi,
the following question is from CHIJ Prelim maths 2015.

Q16. A fruit stall owner had some pears, apples and oranges.
For every 2 pears, there were 3 apples.
For every 9 apples, there were 5 oranges.
36 pears were rotten and thrown away.
Then 1/5 of the remaining fruits were pears.
How many fruits did the fruit owner have at first?
Is the answer 240 or 288?
I used one quantity unchanged method which is the apples and oranges unchanged , the result is 240.
If I used all quantities changed method, the result is 280 which is same as the given answer.
Could anyone point out the error?

I've got 288...not 280
