Is there an error for this P4 questions

Postby bluesky63 » Sun Apr 19, 2015 1:43 pm

Alan had 13 as many marbles as Charles. Ben had 56 as many marbles as Charles. If Ben had 48 more marbles than Alan, how many marbles did the three boys have altogether?

can anyone solve this questions?

I don't think the question makes sense. "as many" means "the same no. as", so I don't think the question can be correct. And even if we assume that there is a typo and "as many" should be replaced by "more than", the numbers don't work.

Sometimes I dont know why questions are phrased in such a funny way. Can simpler english be used?

No wonder I am so confused. I tried to change the English, the numbers also do not make sense.

This is MOE method of using Singapore style of English in Maths questions n also must think out of the box.

Thanks for all your comments

I had posted my queries to the one who set this question to see whether there is any typo error.

by the way, the answer given is 208 marbles

It's not a case of funny or complex English - it's just plain wrong!

Try 1/3 instead of 13, and 5/6 instead of 56. You will get the answer of 208.

Its a typical p4 question on fractions that my DD2 is being drilled in now.

OK, that makes sense! In that case, there is nothing wrong with the English.
