Postby NerdyMath » Mon May 04, 2015 10:07 pm

My DS has been doing a lot of assessmemt books(16books) since the start of the year but his result didn't improve a lot. Anyone has the same problem

Perhaps you can try to see what the underlying issues are? Eg. does he have problems understanding the concepts, or understanding the questions, or carelessness etc. Just doing more of the same without dealing with the specific issues actually reinforces mistakes. My kids are much older now, but I have one who is weak in Maths. We find that getting her to do a moderate amount each day (fewer than 10 questions) with attention paid to why she made mistakes works much better than just doing a lot. When she gets tired, she is less willing to think and carelessness increases.

16 is a lot isn't it? Which level and what subjects?
I personally feel assessment books should not be done for the sake of doing. Quality vs Quantity
Identify the weakness first. Usually is one assessment book per subject. When there are mistakes, do reflection, ie, don't know how to do or careless mistakes.

I agree with Ikid that quality is better than quantity.
I bought only 1-2 assessment books per subject for my DDs. They do not do all. Only pick on topics they are unsure and to enrich their understanding on that topic. Before exam, go through the mistakes and try doing the questions again. If can get them correct, it will mean you understand.
Kids don't like to do assessments especially there are lots of sch homework already.

In IP schools, no time for assessment books, so should not allow the child to be dependent on assessment books too.

My kids used to do a lot of assessment books in Primary School but stopped once they go to Sec School. There is no reliance on assessment books.

If the assessment books are too simple for child's level, it is pointless to do even 20. With time being so precious, quality of the assessment book is important...not too easy as child's brain is not stimulated nor too difficult as he/she will be not be motivated.
