NON EXAM FOCUS Maths/Science enrichment

Postby Happybirdks » Tue Jun 15, 2010 11:48 am

I am looking for those enrichment classes for Maths/Science that are NON EXAM FOCUS and do not have to really have to follow MOE guideline.

I just want my kids to enjoy maths or science, learn interesting topics and have fun in the process.

Does anyone know of such enrichment school in Singapore?

My dd is in P3 and started Science enrichment at Science Buddies (Bt Timah) this term. Today is her 5th lesson. Allow me to briefly share what she did so far...

The first lesson, she dissected a plant and observe the parts of plants, 2nd lesson, she used a microscope to observe the stem n leaves and learnt about stomata n vein. 3rd lesson, she did experiments on magnets and learnt about their properties. 4th lesson, she used iron shavings and horseshoe magnet to learn about magnetic field. Today, she 'made' temporary magnets and learnt about electromagnet.

She looks forward to lesson every week. When she 1st started learning science beginning of the year, she is bored by the many facts she had to memorise and answering open-ended questions was a great challenge. She had to plough through the numerous questions in assessment bks in order to 'get the hang' of answering test and exam qns. Well, she did well for her mid yr exam but was not enjoying the subject.

Now, Science is exciting and she finds great joy in all the experiments she did in Science buddies. Even though she still has to do all the assessments in order to prepare for the coming CA 2 (no choice, must still be exam smart), but she is now doing them with more interest and enthusiasm. :)

I like Science Buddies cos they follow MOE syllabus very closely. In the end, we still have to be realistic and want our kids to do well in exams but not killing their joy for learning in the process. So, I thought Science Buddies offer the best solution. Learn MOE curriculum through hands-on experiments.

I sooo awesomely love your sharing, Lock! :celebrate:
Fantastic write up! Chief! Recommending the post
above for portal publication!

You're making me all excited just reading your sharings..
Yes, classroom routines CAN be a joy killer in a child's learning
journey. Unless of course.. .. if our child(ren) get a good
and inspiring teacher who takes initiative to work hands-on with
the class during Science lessons. 8)

Can share more details.. :rubhands:

Like err... rates?

The fees is $370 for 10 lessons (P3). The lesson is 1.5hrs each week. They have a branch somewhere in the East, I think.

Thanks for your recommendation, Lock.
I will check the place out and see if logistics
wise, if it's convenient to bring my DD for lessons.

Hi,

I know this is an old thread but I was searching for similar topic on the internet and chanced upon the link to this thread. Is Science Buddies still following the same teaching method/format mentioned in the earlier sharing?

Aside to buds, did you eventually sign up for Science Buddies? Was it good?

Thanks.

My style for lower secondary is to make sure that the kids have good foundational understanding. We do some experiments and I try to make it fun and interesting. But at the same time I am trying to build them up so they can do well on tests too. But the idea is to get them to do well because they are using their knowledge and understanding, not because they are memorizing answers to the questions.
