Hi parents, if you are engaging current MOE teacher please ask the tutor to show you MOE pass and NIE certificate.
Don't just believe in whatever tuition agency or the tutor verbally confirmation.

After all, we parents are paying a hefty fee to engage them.

You can engage NIE certified tutor at http://tutorplus.sg and they will provide you with the NIE certificate. But sometimes teacher do not want to circulate their certificates so they will only bring the cert for the first lesson.
For readers' information, NIE do not certify tutors.

Having NIE qualifications imply that the educator is 'trained' to teach in a classroom environment of 30-40 students. That actually does not mean that the are equally competent to teach at private 1-1 levels.

Parents may wish to consider twice, if you are looking to pay a premium for "NIE-trained" tutors. Why do I say so? For instance, lecturers and educators in higher levels of learning, such as universities and polytechnics, do not need to go through the NIE route.

IMHO.

Fully agree with passioninlearning. NIE training is not fully relevant for private tuition. It's a different skillset we're looking at, for these two domains.

Market Rate depends on Demand and Supply.

It is more difficult to get a tutor in the second half of the year after SA1. More so to those taking the National Exams.

Few reasons,
1. Most full-time tutor would have filled their slots since the beginning of the year or the year before.
2. It is not easy to meet the 'expectation' of the client to perform in a short time period.
3. It is considered a last minute short-term assignment, especially for those taking National Exam.
4. Lastly, the commission paid to the tuition agency.
