I would like to ask parents and teachers here who have first hand experience with ADHD kids.

Do you know any diagnosed ADHD kids who lack the “impulsivity” trait? After reading up so much about ADHD, it seems to me that the common trait is impulsiveness? I’m talking about primary school age - let’s exclude preschoolers as they still have some impulsivity (developmentally appropriate for preschooler brains).

There is a variant of ADHD - ADD (missing the "H"). These kids are more dreamy and have inertia rather than impulsivity.

Yes I know, thanks slmkhoo. I know your experience is with ADD.

I’m asking more specifically on ADHD though. My DS is classic hyper. But zero impulsiveness: in fact he considers all angles cautiously before any action. There is absence of any risk-prone behaviour.

Another question because I’m genuinely curious about it. This one is for both ADD and ADHD. Are the kids able to learn to play musical instruments??

I am wondering because it takes huge concentration in order to get the rhythms correct...as well as the notes, fingering and pitch correct. Not to mention the effort at the hard work to practise until the piece is error-free with appropriate dynamics.

Or are there some ADD/ADHD kids who can hyperfocus in this area because it is their strong interest?

I'd say it's independent of whether one has ADHD or not. If the interest is there, they can learn it. I have a close relative with ADHD, and he's learned to play the ukelele and violin because of his interest in music. Of course, with hyperfocus, they can probably master the skill in an even shorter period of time.

This is so true! We have a neighbor w/ ADHD too but he's so talented that he knows how to play different kind of instruments!

Happy New Year parents! Some of you might know that kids with ADHD have a higher tendency to experience emotional dysregulation, which can lead to overwhelming stress or anxiety. If the start of the school year is a trigger factor for your child, have a look at this article on strategies that you can use to help them overcome their anxiety: https://swordsandstationery.com/station ... ay-school/
