Learn Chinese through songs is a good way, but the best way to learn any kind of language is through immersion. Immersion is defined as learning a foreign language like a native speaker learns his mother tongue. Every time you use a language that you already know e.g. English you miss the chance to engage into speaking Chinese. Your ultimate goal should be to think in Chinese and to dream in Chinese. When you reach that level of immersion you will be highly surprised how fast you will progress.

Hi Dfuanm! Thanks for your comment. Much agreed! That's why in my website, I did write about how the fastest way to learn Chinese is probably, like what you mentioned, immersion in a Chinese environment (a prolonged stay in China for e.g.). However, we know that not all could fulfil that level of immersion. Especially in a multi-lingual country like Singapore where English is our lingua franca. :) Having said that, we definitely need to look for other alternatives to "immerse" ourselves in the language. Song learning is but one excellent choice to do so, as it engages, explores deep into the language, often opening up fresh perspectives into Chinese literature. Of course there are other materials to do so - prose appreciation, theatre, and so on. But for early beginners of the Chinese language, it helps to stir great interest. This is spoken through my years of experience interacting with kids.

Please do read my latest blogpost on the recent xinyao local docufilm "The Songs We Sang" (still showing in theatres here), as I try to make a case point on how song composing and appreciation go a long way in shaping our use of the Chinese language. For many who have been through the 70's and 80's, this should relate well. :)
