Kelsey Math Specialist- Official Thread

Postby monkeyno1 » Mon Nov 07, 2016 3:07 pm

Dear Parents,

This is the official thread for Kelsey Math Specialist.

With 10 years of experience tutoring and specializing in Math, I am committed to bringing your child to greater heights in terms of academic improvement and more importantly, your child's interest in Math itself. Classes are conducted in groups of maximum 3 students, or one-to-one classes are available too. I teach students in Primary levels (up to PSLE), Secondary Levels Emath and Amath (up to OLevels), and JC H1 and H2 Math (up to Alevels).

Notes are provided with a summary of each chapter's contents in summarized and easy-to-understand pointers. Many students have feedbacked that the notes have been most useful for their revision for exams. I teach students math via their understanding of the topic and formulas, not by memorizing. At Kelsey Math Specialist, I promote fun and holistic learning, while cultivating students' interest and passion for the subject itself.

Received testimonials from my graduating students, Wong Hai Rong and Noelle Tan, who just took O levels this year. It has been a great pleasure these students and I'm thankful for the opportunities given and the ability to guide these students to their major exams. I wish them all the best for their OLevels, and I look forward to teaching them again when they enter Junior College! :)

End of year Exams (SA2/PSLE/OLevels/Alevels) are recently over!
As students get their results back, it is an important period for parents (and tutors alike) to motivate/encourage/compliment/counsel students - regardless of the grades - on their attitude and mindset of learning prior to the exams.

Results are not a direct reflection of a student's ability.
Especially not a single exam paper! It is essential for a parent /teacher/tutor to first assess the difficulty of the paper, monitor the amount of the effort the student put in for the exam, before determining whether the result is deserving of the student's standard.

The highlighted points show the more important things to do given each situation.
As shown, goal setting needs to be done however the student have fared for the exams.
It is vital to educate the students on humility and resilience, and continue to work hard towards their next goals.

Exams act a general assessment of a student's understanding of subject content, to identify his/her strengths and weaknesses to ensure future effective learning; grades are secondary. It is good to achieve good results, but it is IDEAL to reach beyond just good results, to enable holistic learning which is applicable to the later part of a student's life when he enters adulthood. Thus, parents are encouraged to take grades with a pinch of salt.

At Kelsey Math Specialist, I emphasize on educating students on not just the subject content but also in cultivating interest in the subject itself. We learn not by memorizing but by understanding the concepts so it may be applied easily in future topics. I try to make sure lesson is fun and interactive and not just results-oriented. Students are able to absorb better and achieve more improvement as compared to being in a stressed environment.

This is a collection of goal settings sheets I've previously done up with my students in preparation for their exams.Goal setting is an ideal skill set which motivates students to have something to work towards to, and is also useful to apply to any project they may encounter in future!
