"Confidence is not something you own forever. It is something you most constantly work on." This applies to studies excellence too. Consistency is key!

Building the Motivation to Learn

"Years of experience guiding teenagers for academic excellence has proven one thing. Motivation to learn is the basis for everything. From a teacher's perspective, it is important to guide the student on the purpose of learning and show them how interesting the subject matter can get when you give it a 100% effort."

Experience Sharing.

I once have a student who is branded as "hopeless" and "never amount to much". For almost a year during Secondary 3, his grades were lack-lustre and seem to have submitted himself to failure. At the beginning of Secondary 4, together with his parents, we spoke to him once again and ask him if he wanted to give himself a chance. A chance to prove that he can and a real chance to learn - not only for the sake of exam, but for himself as well. There is really no harm giving himself one year to say "I gave my best, I tried and had no regrets". And there is really no harm "storing" his brains with scientific and mathematical information that allows himself to comprehend how some things work. Perhaps tired of being a poor performer, he agreed to give a try. First, it was hard as his foundation was weak, then he gradually changed his attitude and became more committed to learn. As he learnt more, he began to take more ownership in learning and gain more confident. The change was pleasant, but not unexpected. In ECCA, we believe that every student is unique and possesses their own unique potential. They just need the right type of guidance - both academically and psychologically.

Being both a parent and a teacher myself, I understood the challenges faced - kids are constantly faced with much temptation and distraction. Doing something else gives you short-term gratification, but acquiring knowledge and excelling in studies take effort. Making effort builds character and maturity.

In the end, he made it to JC!
