For avocado Lab, the above advertisement says 90% of their students got AL1 for their prelims but only 70% of their PSLE students got AL4 or better.

Or it could be something is wrong with avocado lab's teaching? :rotflmao:
I would guess the AL4 refers to the Total PSLE Score, not the Math PSLE Subject Score. The line below mentions 60% AL4D; D has nothing to do with Math.

Not sure why the Total Score matters if they are only teaching Math and Science though.

That is so marketing to publish overall AL score when they have no impact on the other 2 subjects, but you are an eagle-eyed parent to pick that point out. Similarly, in the past, some tuition centres like to draw attention to the PSLE T-score(which has no meaning) when they should just focus on the A and A* scored for the subjects they offer.

Ya @SG_KP1 you are right. The AL4 refers to the total psle score. So advocado lab math had 70% of their students with a perfect total AL score of 4 points, which also means 70% of their students scored straight AL1 for all the 4 psle subjects. Very impressive.

Actually advocado lab also teach chinese since 2022.

I think @san20sg misread the original post by advocado lab math.

WA is not a good gauge, since it only tests a limited number of topics, and the time is shorter as well. EOY tests all topics under a longer time, with both Paper 1 (no calculator allowed) and Paper 2.

Going by the experience of many parents this year, there’s no guarantee of AL1 in Math even if consistent all along. Focus on the weaker subjects as there is more room for improvement. Languages especially has massive room for increase in marks for components such as Oral and Compo. We got more boost in marks from creating good impressions in languages than from trying to prevent careless Math errors.

Hi sushi88, you may be surprised that Avocado’s impact on our students go beyond the 4 subjects, so much so that we don’t do much actual PSLE prep.

We are a niche center for the discerning, or what you call the eagle-eyed parent. We posted our stats but we never advertised it or printed it on some poster. It was intended for OUR students to see, to let them know that we are proud of them.

So, we are not bothered by random people thinking that we are doing false marketing or faking stats.

And yes since you asked for us to focus on our core subject, everybody except a single student got AL1 for maths. He got AL2 and we all had a good laugh about it, including the kid himself!

He did not feel bad, nor did anybody think less of him. That’s what really matters, right?

Woah, so surprised to hear from the horse's mouth.. Congratulations all Math students got AL1 and only 1 did not. At least I know tuition for Math is still good for kids who want to get AL1 considering results seem so uncertain for some kids in the new system.

The intent of my post was actually to point out to this parent who posted that he/she always has a good eye for detail and read information accurately and I kudos that coz as a parent, I might not have picked that out if it was not highlighted. Just an encouragement for this parent who always posts good information. Also, to state generally that many tuition centres in the past actually published the T-score as a common marketing practice, so it was quite a commonly-used marketing approach it seemed and hence someone like me would feel oblivious to it. So there was nothing personal about your centre per se.

If you are truly not bothered, you would not have made this post. :?

Also, you mentioned this info was only shared with your students but the moment I clicked on the webpage, the info of pride stared back blatantly at my face, how was this only sharing with YOUR students on a World Wide Web? :?
I am confused by your explanation so a suggestion is if you have put information in a public space as a business, be prepared for comments by random people to be made coz your awkward defence made it worse.... in Chinese we say... "越描越黑“....let your good work on the AL1 students do the talking. Since CNY is round the corner, 祝你生意兴隆

ok, so 70% AL 4, 60% AL 4D, which means is 130% AL 4?

Or AL 4 D is 60%, and 10% is AL 4(no HMT) total 70% AL 4?

Or 70% got AL 4 for Math and 60% got AL 4D total?

Then what about the average 4.9? How to get that figure?

There is nothing to defend. You made an uninformed comment. It is only fair that I respond to you.

Of our students, 60% of the total got AL4D.
If we include those who got AL4 total but did not get distinction for MTL, then the % goes to 70%.

To get 4.9, I simply added all the AL totals together and divide it by the number of students. I excluded a number of foreign students who have no MTL though, as they will be AL 3 total for 3 subjects or 9 for 4 subjects (students with no mother tongue get at least 6 points added for the purpose of secondary school posting)

Yes, it is for 4 subjects and not math alone. We are a math Olympiad center. AL1 for PSLE school math is the default score.
