Wah... ZacK... you so fast already looking for more members? Good job! So if you find 13 members does it mean you get 100% off the course? Like that I also want! :)

Haha... I'll let amylqf have the first go since she brought this up to us here 8) ... I understand the discount is cumulative however can only use one 8% discount per term... So if you accumulate more than 1, then can use the 2nd 8% discount for next term's payment ;)

Just curious, CMA teaches add and subtract only or all the 4 operations? What is their curriculum like?

Abacus training

My gal is with CMA Pandan Valley for a year. Parents do be prepared that CMA has quite a fair bit of homework each week. Kiddo are expected to practise their abacus. For those who are interested in CMA, this is their website:

http://www.cma-sg.com/

However, I have heard from my SIL that abacus may not be good for the child as they can easily work out the sums mentally and tends to skip the workings in sch test/exams which accounts for marks. Is that true? I am hestiating whether to send my younger boy to the class if that is the case.

Hi Zack
Have you signed up at Pandan Valley? Who will be your child's teacher? Personally I find Teacher Matthew and Audrey is pretty good. These days seems to have quite a few new teachers.

Yes I have... Will be going for the Sunday 2pm slot starting 24 Aug... Spoke with Teacher Matthew over the phone he sounds eloquent and Audrey went through the program with me when I went for site visit... The program being from Taiwan... I thought it would be too "cheena" and my boy may not like it... Anyway they assured me that the classes are conducted in both languages.

As for your other concern above... I guess we need to emphasize to our kids that they must show working to evidence that they know the concept... But can use mental calculation for verifying their answers?

They are doing 4 operators, running mental sum and abacus practice at the same time. The goal is to do mental sum without using abacus in hand.

Yes, like what bubble said. Parents need to be prepare of homework. but the homework normally is based on the child ability. The teacher won't forced child to do 5 pages if the child only can handle 2 pages. Consistency practice is the key.

Regarding bubble's concern on conflicting with primary school work. It is best time for the preschool kids to learn abacus as they have a fresh mind and not a lot of homework from kindy. If the child has already start primary school, then the parents need to tell the child that the metal sum ability is to verify the answer (not skipping working steps) and used on other daily activity (like calculation grocery shopping, buy food from store, etc).

hope it helps.
