How basic are you referring to?

Generally start with verbal counting using things around you - toys, flowers, cups, grapes. Introduce the symbols and how to write. Then move to addition when the child is ready. Introduce symbol for addition. Then to subtraction. At the side, expose the words for the numbers. Supplement with dot to dot books. That's all ready for primary one already. Use maniulatives, their toys etc. Numbers are all around you.

If your child has learnt all that, you can introduce skip counting and simple fractions. Some kids learn their time tables by K2, others learn volume through baking and water play. I only did up to simple fractions with mine. The important thing is to make Maths relevant to them. That's my 2 c.

Hi bbsin,

Yes, you may teach him how to count first.. using different kinds of objects, so that he will remember the count, not the object. (some children tend to remember the object!) and test him which floor does he stay, when he goes into the lift, get him to press! :) this will help him recognize the numbers and match it in his mind.

then after which can move on to simple addition, like 1+1=2, so can do simple experimenting, like 1 apple + 1 apple etc... :)

kids are very visual and likes to touch and explore things at this age.. just need to be very patient and give them to space to explore while learning what you want them to learn. :)

Is there any good assessment books to help us teach our K2 child at home? I heard of some home school programme from US that we can use ... anyone tried? But I am not sure if its relevant to our singapore context.

Enroll MPM programme. It is better to engage a professional help even though parents can teach.

But MPM is not very relevant to MOE syllabus I heard. Is that true?

Math is Alive subject and this subject is very important even in university besides languages.

Training the child in logic, visualization skills, independent Learner, full of confidence at young age is a blessing to the child.

Your child won't lose out in primary school. With added guidance from parents, the child will excel well.
