How to teach your child to tell time in English?

Postby maple » Sun Jun 07, 2009 5:42 pm

Hi Mummies,

I need some advise as to how to teach a 5 YO to tell time in English.
So far, I only teach the X o'clock & half past X type. How to teach minutes?

Btw, the child already know how to tell time in Mandrain. So I also need to make sure that the child does not get confused with the English version.

I think it involves a little bit of maths concept. eg. 一个字=5mins

I dun really 'teach' him to read time, but weave it into daily life naturally, esp when it is something he likes, eg. watching his favourite cartoon. tell him this cartoon starts at certain time (sometimes I purposely say wrongly for him to correct me)

another way is to buy a digital clock/ watch so that he can read the digital time against the analogue time...

hope it helps!

Hi Maple,

Do you intend to teach the minutes in English by 'half past' or 'quarter to' or 'three twenty-five', 'two-fifty'..?

reminds me of a song we sung in pri school. the lyrics go like 'it's only half-past-three'. I think as kids, we learnt alot of concepts from songs

Do take a look at P1 syllabus (go to Popular bookstore to see the assessment books) to see if they are teaching quarter past/half past kind of thing..do they teach 10.50am as Ten Fifty or Ten min to Eleven?
But of course you can teach all these for basic knowledge purpose.

Hi all,
Thanks for your comments.

Wan,
Yes, it involves maths concept and the problem is the child does not know multiplication yet. We incorporate time in daily life too, but we always say it in Mandarin. Hmm... maybe I can start saying it in English instead.

Concern2,
I intend to teach 'three twenty-five', 'two-fifty'.

Jedamum,
Good idea. Nvr thot of that.
