Hi, any tips to help differentiate "affect" and "effect"? My boy keeps using the wrong word, don't know how to help him.

Hi TAS

I checked with your staff before they said situational writing is not covered in your writing program or regular class? May I know the reason as I think it's not comprehensive enough if without this part. TKS

Hello xzizi,

One useful way to help children remember vocabulary is to use mnemonics! Help them to associate the words to their meaning.

An example of using mnemonics could be:

1. Affect
A stands for ACT
Affect is usually a verb. It is an act that changes / impacts something.

Eg. When you scream, it will affect the sleeping babies.

2. Effect
E stands for END
Effect is usually a noun. The end result of something.

Eg. The children in school falling sick was an effect of the haze.

Questions can get tricky but using the mnemonics they can make a better choice between affect and effect.

1. The collapsed trees was an _________ of the thunderstorm. (noun, end result, effect)
2. The thunderstorm could _________ the trees in the city. (verb, act, affect)

This is just a guideline, we hope it helps!
Find out what works best for your child!

Hi melodybobo,

Thank you for your message. We understand your concern...
Our team has already been working on the materials and it's in the pipeline. While we already launched it for the recently graduated P6 students, we will be refining and improving it before introducing it to the rest of the levels.

If you would like to find out more, you may drop us a DM with your contact details and we'll have someone speak with you!

Enjoy your weekend!
