I'm keen to know too...bcos son attends only once a week English, but the other 6 days are more crucial.

hello,

yes that's true. my parents used to send me to a well known enrichment centre where my monthly fees were as high as 500 per month. but in the end my grades were disappointing.

we decided not to continue with the tuition centre after that, but instead drew up a plan with a home tutor, where i had to read a certain number of chapters from a book everyday and write a composition every alternate day. and of cos after reading the books, i will have to give an account to my tutor. :)

my parents didnt have a lot of time to spend with me so hiring a tutor was essential to make sure i keep to the timetable. but if you are stay at home parents and have more time to spare, then a tutor will probably not be needed unless you want someone more experienced to mark the compositions for your children.

pls pardon my broken english in this reply as i'm writing casually. :) just my 2 cents worth.

read more widely to increase vocabs, and ability to improve the plot

take note on the intro, the body and the plot, the climax, and the ending

write a compo everyday under strict guidance and marked by an experienced tutor.....child must buy in to the regime, else it is useless

once this section improves, it helps to improve grammar, cloze passage, and situational writing

student should do it one level higher than existing level in school

I sent my elder boy for creative writing from P1 to P3, followed by a holiday writing course with Catherine Khoo's Young Author Scheme, buy him many story books since young, bring him to libraries frequently. He has a good EL teacher in P5/P6 who takes interests (by putting in comments/questions in the pupils' writing) in what the pupils wrote for journals, miscellaneous writing, creative writing and situational writing.
