I have an expatriate friend who sent his daughter to Julia Gabriel and swears by its effectiveness in promoting confidence through their speech and drama classes. It is one of the most established English enrichment courses available, and well-known throughout the expatriate circles. Not cheap, though.

Hi,

Hope this reply does not come too late for you.

My kids went for JG weekend bilingual playclub when they are 18 months. BTW, they are now K2 and P1. I don't recall that they learn anything significant but one thing for sure was when they started their daily pre-nursery, they didn't have that separation anxiety at all. So they settled very well into the daily school despite only attending the prog on weekend. In comparison my youngest who didn't attend any of such program (as we didn't have time) suffered from separation anxiety. She cried for about 2 weeks on her daily program.

Subsequent to that, I actually send them for the JG speech & drama classes. My girl was extremely quiet in school eg. not speaking to the teacher at all for 1 year. The teacher was also one of a kind and she was asked to leave after 3 terms. So i put her through S&D to boost her confidence. That happened in nursery - K1 and she sure came out of her shell by K1. But by end K1, we felt that her phonics and word recognition wasn't strong, so I switch her to phonics classes with Jan & Elly and only let them attend S&D under crestar on weekdays as there are concession rates for kinderland students and also we can only afford to do so much on weekends.

If you asked me if JG is really so great. I don't really think so. Yes, there are some developments that I see BUT sometimes, it's also about readiness in a child and the child's character. Eg. I was very on the ball for enrichment classes that I also sent them to seimpei for music. Well, I stopped after a year as I felt it's not possible to force a 2 yr old to play on keyboard when their motor skills are not even that ready. So when I look back now, a program doesn't need to be expensive to be effective.

I have recently enrolled my gal to Julia Gab. for their bilingual playgroup. It's a 2 hour programme where it's conducted in Mandarin and English. There are 4 teachers in total. 2 for English the other 2 for Mandarin.

I have always been very keen in this biligual programme as part of the lesson is conducted in Mandarin. I must said I am very impressed by the Mandarin part especially the story telling period. It's really animated. Though my gal couldn't understand a single Mandarin, she was so attentive and really follow through out the story. The China teachers role played and they needn't read from any book. As for the English bit, I'm a little disappointed. They read directly from a book and it's rather uninteresting.

But on the whole, it's still good and I find that my gal is trying to 'speak' more after attending this programme.

Compared to Growing Up Gifted, Julia Gab is slightly more pricey but I feel that the teacher at Julia Gab speaks better English and needless to say, the Mandarin is superb! Also, at JG they encourage children to speak up and be more independent.

Hi,

Anyone has kids in Julia Gabriel's Readers and Writers Program? Is this program good? I am planning to send my P1 dd to this program and would appreciate your feedback.
