Kid's who love poetry

Postby dovetail » Wed Jun 08, 2011 6:38 pm

My daughter loves poetry. She also writes whenever she feels inspired.

I don't enjoy poetry as she does and wonder how I can find her a circle of people to talk poetry with her or resources to support her interest. Her classmates think she's weird to love poetry. For me, I'm trying very hard to look interested. She read me Shakespeare's sonnets, so cheem, I cannot take it.

Is there any organization in Singapore that does poetry? I recall my son brought us to a poetry slam competition last year at Laselle College. It was really fun. I regret not knowing who the organizer was.

I tried National Book Council, Young Writer's Circle but their activities seems to cater more for older writers.

She's 11. Usually she finds poetry books from the NLB by herself. She loves to talk about what she reads, giving her interpretations and inferences.

I encourage her to write and her Eng. teacher has created a wikispace for her to collect her work. I guess she has to wait till she goes to Sec Sch where they have some literature clubs that she can join so she can meet her own kind.

There's a very good Creative Arts Programme organised by the GEP branch for selected students who are very strong in writing. They have a mentorship programme as well. I'm not sure if your dd's school participates in it. I believe it might be open to non-GEP students as well.

Thanks jtoh, yes, she was selected to apply. No guarantee she can get in. I left it to her to work with her teacher all by herself. Had to do a portfolio. I read her work, it was nice and childlike. Not sure if okay but I think judges appreciate authenticity and I also think that the child is most creative when adults don't interfere.

Jtoh, I think you have a girl in RGS, right? May I know if my girl is not the competitive type will she get stressed by the girls there? We were at open house, I talked to the academic director, he was gracious, humble and warm. I was very touched he brought my girl to see the school ICT. What is the class size?

Wow!!! nice to see that some other parent is also in the same boat as me.

My daughter is also in P5 and love poetry. She writes poem as well. Her english writing is also very good & she top her level in english in most of the exam in last two years.

But I am not from literature background and don't know much how to encourage her or support her to improve her writing.

After reading the post I checked the "Creative Arts Program" but founds they are for secondary students.

Appreciate if you can share about the "Mentorship Programme".

I'm glad to find someone having a kid with the same interest. I'm also not a lit. person. Also feel that I could do more to hone her skills.

The CAP is also available for for Pri 5 kids but I think it's for the GE. Not sure of it's available to the High Ability ones too. To apply, you need to submit 4 pieces of your best writing ( at least one poetry on one prose). Do reflections for each of them. Also have to do a mandatory creative work assignment of min. 250 words. If selected, you have to attend a 3 or 5 day camp. Her Eng teacher said the camp is very good.

If you are keen, perhaps you can ask your child's Eng teacher if can join. I think you need to submit through school. The deadline is 27June Monday when school reopens.

Sorry, I don't have any link to any web info. on the P5 CAP. If your dd is in a Gep centre school, the English teacher there should know. Otherwise, you can let the teacher know it is organized by the Gep branch.

The CAP for sec Sch also done by GE branch so it's the same program but diff level I think.

Nice to know kids so young already can appreciate poetry. Our exposure was only from secondary in the past. I believe it takes a mature mind to understand and interpret poetry.... your children are so bravo.. :salute:
