After Leapfrog Letter Factory DVD....

Postby xueyan » Tue Sep 06, 2011 2:47 pm

Many thanks to those who recommend the Leapfrog Letter Factory DVD. My boy who is 3 years old is now able to recognise all the 26 letters after watching the DVD for 2 months.

I am totally amazed by that. Ds has delayed speech and doesn't like to talk much.

May I know what should i do next. I have showed him the Leapfrog Talking Words to him but i think it may be too difficult for him.

I wish he could increase his vocabulary (he knows less than 50 words) and hope he could start speaking in sentence. What other DVD are recommended?

Thanks!

Hi Shirley,
After the Leapfrog DVD, you must continue to teach him phonics. Check out my blog :

A child who has a good foundation in phonics will be able to spell very easily. In fact, my kids, now in P1 and P2, do not need to spend time learning their spelling lists in school because they already know how to spell all the words without any practice.

It is also very important to start teaching sight words. Personally I think that the Peter and Jane series is the best :

Thanks to these books, both my kids can read long English novels like Charlotte's Web and Charlies and the Chocolate Factory at 5 years old.

The best way to improve vocabulary and also to learn grammar, is to read good books:

Hi Tamarind

Many thanks for your reply. I really admire your efforts to teach your kids. I don't think I can ever do that.

I am a lazy mum who go thru a lazy way to teach my kid, like showing him leapfrog dvd.... haha

May I check with you when you teach your kids phonics, do you explain the meaning of each word? Or just telling him how to pronounce it?

As for the Peter & Jane series, i think this is highly recommended in this forum. I understand there are 3 series of 12 books each. I actually plan to get just 1 series to see whether my boy like it. But do i understand correctly that we have to start with 1a, 2a, 3a followed by 1b, 2b, 3b...?

Thanks!

Hi shirley_low67,
I really did not put in much effort teaching my kids, only about 15 to 30 mins a day.

For young children, we should try to explain every word, and it is best to demonstrate the action or use real objects.

For Peter and Jane, read my blog :

Many parents thought that they should read Peter and Jane to their kids, this is a very big mistake. These books are not designed for parents to read, they are designed for kids to read. Kids must be taught to point to every word and read out loud. For children who does not know how to read, you need to start from book 1a.
