The new format for PSLE gives 3 pictures which may or may not be connected to each other. All 3 pictures will only be linked by a particular abstract theme, e.g. honesty.

Students will be given the option of using at least one of these pictures to construct a narrative related to the theme. For example, one of the pictures may be of picking up a wallet; the narrative then revolves around an act of honesty in which a lost wallet is returned to its rightful owner.

The new format also gives students the option of writing an expository essay, which requires a change in the style of language deployed and can be seen as a pre-secondary school exposure. Students write a discursive essay exploring the various facets of kindness, using the pictures as examples.

These are rather steep and demanding changes, so it is not alarming that schools will choose to introduce it only in late pri 3 or pri 4.

Hi Writer - Do you think it would be a good idea to expose our kids to write a compo based on one picture only since that would be the format. We do not give them four pictures to write a compo. Will it helps if we just give them topic to write the compo. What are the topics we can explore? Honesty, unforgetable day or experience, robbery etc.

Hi Blue Pearl

Depends on your child's level. If dc is p1 to early p3, it's ok to still have 4 pictures because they need those aids to help them construct a linear narrative.

Topics wise, you will need a picture. Since it's only for personal use, what you might want to consider is looking for online images related to the theme. The themes can be general concepts - An act of honesty or kindness, pain, surprise, anger etc.

Take care not to choose "adult" pictures - as in things which dc can't really relate to. For example, choosing a picture for anger. You can relate to getting scolded by a manager and blamed for some company mishap you didn't cause, but dc probably won't have that exp/background to write about it, so the pictures will ideally involve kids, or be something kids can relate to.

my boy attends usual eng n maths tution in RC. He used to be in ICR.
Last year I ended his ICR. His tution teacher in RC commented that his creative writing has weakened and getting worse.
I wasn't sure to bring him back to ICR, L Central or other creative writing classes.
