Need help on writing with DS2 (age 4yrs 5 months)

Postby optimistforum » Thu Jan 07, 2010 5:13 am

Hi

My DS2 is in Reception class (cohort 4-5); and he has dropped from the top table to the second table as his writing is not up-to-scratch. His reading is great and he is on Peter and Jane 3a, however, he cannot write.

He is unable to write a letter if his teacher sounds it out. He can recognise letters, and if a letter is sounded out he will find it on the alphabet list. However, if he is say asked to write the letter "b"; he is unable to do this of his own volition. His physical writing is not good and he can only write out a few letters and the numbers "0" and "1".

Has anyone any thoughts on how I can improve his writing, namely his ability to write out letters. Any publications I can refer to, please?

optimistforum,
My son is now 5 years 3 months old. His writing is not very nice, but I think is fine for a 5 year old child. My girl was able to write much better at the same age.

Take a look at her little essays and drawings here :

I actually did not have a routine to let them practice writing. My kids spend most of their time playing with lots of toys that develop their fine motor skills. For my boy, I gave him the Kumon maze books and he liked them very much. These books train him to control the pencil. I think you should be able to find Kumon books at the popular website. Otherwise try amazon. Kumon also has lots of books that train handwriting.

I spoke with DS2's teacher yesterday. She says they are working on his writing, which is very good considering they are an OFSTED resistered outstanding school.

I have been told to get DS2 to orally sound out the letters/diagraphs of a word/ Eg, if I ask him to spell "bed", he will sound out b, then ed, instead of b, e, then d. Does anyone know what to do, as he will not generally sound out the last letter.

Should we use alphabet cards, and show him such words and ask him to sound out the lletters/diagraphs?

Hi there

Just a quick update, I went to school this morning and teacher told me that DS2 has now moved back to the top table. Sounding out words and writing were weak points, and these have been addressed at home over the last few weeks.......Phew
