Recommended bookstores in China (Shanghai or Beijing)

Postby pancake77 » Tue Feb 28, 2012 10:39 pm

Dear mummies and daddies,

I'll be going to China. Could anyone please recommended any major bookstores that sell books for primary school? Something like Popular bookstore equivalent?

Thanks.

They have book city and those are very big. There is one at wangfujing, very near the entrance to that street from forbidden city side. Not bad and very big. I prefer though, the one in shanghai. Can't recall the name offhand but it's a short distance away from singapore's raffles city mall. There are signages showing the way. That bookshop consists of many stories and has the best variety - selection is next best to dangdang.

If you can only visit one, shanghai is the place.

Thanks so much

Is "book city" the name of the bookstore?

And you mentioned that you prefer the one in shanghai - this bookshop consists of many storeys ie it is a building on its own?

Actually in both Beijing and Shanghai, their 'book city' is a bookshop and it spans several stories. I personally prefer the selection in Shanghai becos they have fantastic array of books for kids (fiction, non fiction equally impressive). Found my little slip with their details.

The one in shanghai is at:
上海书城 福洲路465号。tel: 63914848

they have a few other branches, another one that looks pretty close by is 南京东路353号广场SF. But I started walking from Raffles City.

BTW, Not sure how many times you have been to china, but I would recommend bringing sturdy reusable bags for shopping. Bookshops in China are very 'green'. they do not provide plastic bags but will tie up your purchases as proof of purchase. If you want to carry it by yourself, they may put a stamp inside your book as proof of purchase (some may not like them to 'deface' the book).
