Some parents engaged home tutor & get the materials for practice. Whichever way, parents hv to work out & choose wisely the best that suits their kids.
Just out of curiosity, how many CL and EL tutors did your ds have in P5-6?

You signed up for Huayi tuition in addition to WLC? Or you got a home tutor to use WLC and Huayi notes to coach ds?

And for EL, you enrolled in TLL, Academia and Writers@Work in P5-6?

Cos I saw you highly recommending these centres in other threads. Seems like one needs to have double or triple centres to score an A* for these lang subjects!

Why are you soooo curious?

My kids go to 汪老师 fr P5 & P6 and they've home tutor since P3 (no specific direction or good materials). Home tutor only buy assessment books fr Popular.

In P5, my child doing both W@W & TLL. In P6, we dropped W@W & went to Academia & stayed with TLL coz kid refused to part with sweet young thing. Tho my kids like TLL, I find materials good but teacher's there useless in coaching & correcting. No choice as don't wanna break tt bond, but OK coz we were staying Central. :rotflmao:

Now doing 华艺 in sec.

To satisfy your curiosity, I hope u u'stand too that in language learning, there are diff components. W@W Ms Agnes was a chance discovery for helping my child do well in compo. Academia was sth I finally felt money well spent (less than expensive TLL) to perfect S&T & added bonus for Oral coaching. I'm not going for grades, but for my kids, I'll like them to hv strong grasp of diff components of any language as it's the leading tool to equip them.

Hope abv satisfy yr cuuuurooosiiiity!

Haha. Thanks for the explanation, esp the 'sweet young thing' at TLL!

It's my first time hearing about Huayi. So Huayi is better than WLC for sec-school.

No lah...curious because I saw many recommendations but don't know which one is the best. I feel tuition by component adds more stress to parents. Also, it's a lot of money and takes up a lot of time for both parents and dc to have double or triple tuition for 1 subject. The hopping around from mall to mall. Can die...

No la. For sec kids get too busy & hv no time for tuition, & I heard abt 华艺 late last year. Happen it's more convenient for us to hop over & found the quality & teacher dedication very good. She's got not more tha 6 students for her class. So, in a way better than 汪 having to crowd for attention. 刘老师 hv a younger kid with NH & the older is with RI, attended her P6 talk to parents how to tackle 作文 , 口试 , 理解问答 & 便条 writing to help our kids revised and those were really gems & can tell her experience & dedication.

Yes. Was very watchful & worried add stress when I wasn't happy with TLL. But turned out tt my child enjoyed learning & was relieved. I do agree, of course, not for the faint hearted. If u've been following my recommendations, then u wld hv seen me writing to alert parents to watch & balance their child's rest time, R&R as well as study time coz physical growing & devpt is impt to help kids with too.

My child doesnt show interest in attending, but he will focus during the lesson, learn his tingxie and moxie. Generally, his chinese communication skills are not good, even though he can score in paper 2. Often, his sentence construction in compo writing are flawed, some direct eng to chi translation.

Do u find yr child is keeping up with school 听写 & 默写?

If u can tell yr child is not writing fluent sentence structure, then u shld be able to help him revise, unlike my Indonesian frd who hv zero Chinese capability.

If he has been scoring in Paper 2, looks like he has been paying good attention.

I use performance in school as a gauge, but like I shared earlier, in a Centre tt incl students fr other schools, it does provide some benchmark of national std rather than sch std.

Maybe he need to hv more encouragement to enjoy 汪 classes. O'wise, then get him a home tutor or find teachers fr other Centre u find suitable.
Home tutor might be a good idea...

DC had home tutor but we soon realized it bores them to death & tuition centre classroom context gives them the ooophm & the competitive challenge to learn fast as there're lots of interactions to stimulate them.

In our journey thro'out Pri sch years, we've found challenges to finding good tutors. Native language tutors do not nec know how to teach nor NIE teachers nec are effective. We had for 2 mths a supposedly NIE, ex-MOE teacher & author of primary Chinese materials but gave up. Her fees was $95 per hour & had to be at her home coz her girl is doing PSLE. But one mth into tuition, DC said daughter kept interrupting & tutor assign work & disappear to discipline her son & other errands. That wasn't professional. The last straw was when she insisted we purchase exam papers for DC to do during her lesson time! I tried suggesting tt we normally get our child to do on his own & tutor time for marking & explanation/correction/coaching to learn. She disagreed & we parted ways.

I've always been decisive & when I assess a tutor hv not done an effective job, I'll cut our time. I'll actively search for good tutors/tuition centre teachers, attending parents talk with hubby. Looking back, it's an exciting journey to inform ourselves what & how we shld equip ourselves or our kids for learning. S'times it's our own kids who stumbled us fr cutting their time {as in TTL's way of enticing our kids with lovely gifts (fr our heavy fees) & exciting young teachers to captivate their desire to stay in class} & I'll constantly try persuading them out to try sth else.

As a family, we all learn to manage our time together. Hubby & I will run off for grocery/supermkt, house-hunting, ID-hunting, massages at times or haircare sessions. Thankful we did just one year, the 2 languages tuition at King's Arcade was back-to-back 2-plus-2 hours (汪 & W@W) & I managed to hop over to NTUC, pick child up for quick lunch & back to class. Got kids back for an afternoon nap, get hmwork done & dinner with family or extended family.

Am thankful we're done with primary school & happy to share our experiences. Now kids do not need tuition as they becomes more mature & confident they're all independent learners now.

Point is don't waste time & help relieve yr kids fr painful, ineffective tuition when nec. P5/P6 years hv to watch their health & allow for enuf R&R as well as sufficient sleep. Be thoroughly involved knowing what yr child is learning. I've picked up a lot more Chinese phrases in my journey with my kid!

Hi Esteema,

don't mind if you can share, was it mentally tiring for your son, to do back-to-back 4 hours of P5 writing (Wang lao shi zuowen + Writers-at-work English composition) then, at King Arcade branch ?

We were warned to revise weekly with DC for 汪so child can keep up, so we did that dutifully weekly. It seems easy enuf & DC never complained.

At W@W, Ms Agnes kept the class very well engaged & I believe the kids enjoyed brainstorming activities & tossing their ideas on the whiteboard they've no boring moments to stress them.

Maybe also I made an effort to find kakis (his schoolmates) to join in and they hv fun, altho there were other kids fr RGS, NYPS, Farrer Park and a cousin frd of classmate fr Int'l Sch when they started.

In fact, after our journey in Pri sch with our kids, we realized that by and large, this generation of kids are very curious & eager to learn, like sponges they absorb so much when having fun.

So, I believe it's impt to hv the right tutor who can inspire the child to hv fun when learning and impart concepts for application.
