Shichida or Glenn Doman or both?

Postby quixation » Fri Apr 25, 2008 12:16 am

Hi, i am a new mum. I need parents out there to help me to decide if to enrol my baby for Shichida..

My gal started on Glenn Doman maths since 6mths+ and seeing that she really likes it, we started the english reading program just last month. All the videos we tape of our sessions does shows that she loves the sessions and I have grown to RESPECT her in a way that i do not keep thinking if she is learning. I just do my part and let her take her own steps..

Everyone's talking abt Shichida & they seems to be so secretive abt the whole program (which I really hate)..Its also expensive. most importantly, I heard feedback that some active babies do not take to the serious teachings very well.. I love the theory behind GD's programs which is to NURTURE the LOVE FOR LEARNING in my baby -rule no. 1 so I am worried that being too serious in Shichida may confuse my baby and 'force' her to learn.. My baby loves music very much and I have decided to try her out when she turns 12mths at Seimpi.. Now she loves her Gym sessions and glenn doman sessions nightly. So we also worry about the time (me working mum) we have if we need to do another 30min of Shichida with her.. Shichida also said I need to book and place deposit of SGD300 for priority place for maybe july or the following term! Too commercial i feel...

anyway, can any kind parents who has gone for Shichida or Igenius email me your feedback and comments?

Hi quixation,

If you are already with Glenn Doman and are happy with the results, I would recommend that you stay the course. You will probably see diminishing returns if you sign up for Shichida along with your Glenn Doman course, since a significant part of the effect that these courses provide do overlap in their training. The additional "boost" is likely to be only incremental. Why not save the money for more physical programmes such as gym or swimming activities?

I like Glenn Doman because I feel it is more wholistic than Shichida, which, as you pointed out, is unable to cope with the success of its marketing engine and has to resort to making parents pay hefty deposits to book a place months in advance. But Glenn Doman's main focus is on children under 3 years old, so perhaps that would be a good time for you to switch to a more mature programme.

I sent my boy to Shichida and I think the root of the method is similar to Glenn Doman's. The method also emphasies on nuturing the children's love for learning by making activities fun for the children and emphasise on parents interaction with children and the for parents to play an important part to the children's learning experience through home practise sessions. Like GD, Shichida also uses tools like flash and dot cards and the class is not serious but carry out in a manner that keep the children interested.

Personally, I find the fees too expensive too and sending them to many enrichment classes is really quite taxing in terms of timingas well. I am also FTWM.

Perhaps we can share tips and techniques for this two methods and intergate them to the home practise sessions?

hey first of all, thanks for time to write the replies!

I took my hubby to the preview of shichida today. And he thinks if I really wanna try, just apply..The lady at the Springleaf counter wasnt really helpful in answering my questions and doubts.. When i ask her if the July intake is already full, she just ask us to apply first and the 'programmer in charge' will contact us and we shld place a deposit to get priority place. I think she should work in those slimming salon who will try to get you to sign a package on impulse. Luckily I didnt, I told her nevermind, I will call Toa payoh branch and check coz they are more polite and patient in answering my questions. So I called the HDB Hub branch and they told me that July intake is already full. If I send in the application now, I could get a place in the Oct 08 if not Jan 09 term! I think that Jocelyn is really earning big bucks on this...So i have decided NOT to join Shichida.. reason is simple... I dont get good vibes from the people there so how can i trust that they treat the sessions as an educational session rather than 'just a job' mentality..

Besides, another half hour of shichida home sessions will kill my baby's night time.. I must leave some time for her daddy to bond with her and do their ancient chinese proverbs and social studies (san zhi jing, cheng yu, lun yu and tang shi)...

I have always have certain dislike for people trying to get me to part with my hard earn money on impulse. Shichida too commercial.. too secretive..too much marketing strategies involved. compared to the help and assistance i got from the GD baby team, I feel more confident of GD now..

Like chief Kiasu says, i should concentrate on GD for my baby all the way through to 3 yrs and take it from there.. I know of many mums who gave up halfway but I feel its not being fair to our children. I feel i will set a bad example to my gal if I give up on something so easily. It doesnt take much time a day anyway. Now I try to change the sessions timing so it will still interest her..

Mincy, yes we should exchange tips and techniques so we can all save our little money for their future education! Actually you can just read the GD books and you will know the fundamentals of the program. After abt 2 weeks, I already can gasp the whole reasoning and idea behind the dot cards and flash cards so now I am more confident of how i can bring out the sessions with my baby.

Although Shichida do some language teaching, I think we can all do that at home. My maid, myself, my brother and sister all speaks English to my baby while my hubby only speaks Mandarin to her and handles all the teachings in Mandarin including songs and reading.. sometimes I even teaches her some simple words in Japanese, Korean, Spanish and French whenever i come across it..like singing Duermete Mi Nina which i learn from sesame street.

The only thing that GD does not have is the creative games that they uses so in fact, if anyone is kind enough to share with other mums like us, we wont need to spend SGD3000/year...Heard they have a store so you can buy some materials, can we non members buy from the stores?

And for the maths program, Shichida DO NOT INCLUDE '0' (ZERO) but GD does and i think that number is equally important! I am waiting for the day i flash the blank card to my baby and would love to see her reaction..

As FTWM, we probably only have time for our children at night and weekends so weekends should be fun! If it includes running abt to classes, there wont be any alone time with us anymore!!

BTW, you guys can see the videos of my baby on the GD program and give me some advice.. I am still trying to perfect my flashing cards skills..if anyone finds anything wrong with my sessions, please please let me know so I can improve myself!

Mincy, maybe you can let us know some creative games that may be easy for us to follow at home...

That's interesting, because I have the exact same experience as yourself, except it was at the Toa Payoh branch :? The staff were polite, but they have the "emergency room" syndrome where they will only deal with people in the most need.

A lot of parents don't realize that sending kids to enrichment courses is just 20% of the work - if they want the system to work, they have to put in the other 80% of their OWN TIME to follow up on the training at home. Your daughter is so fortunate that you and your husand is able to spend such time with her.

 wow... we have a genius in the making here.

They have a store in Shichida, but only "members" -read parents with kids already training with them - can buy things there. Perhaps you can arrange with one of the parents here already with Shichida to buy on your behalf. Or even better, exchange your GD materials for Shichida ones. I thought I saw some online stores offering Shichida materials... will dig them out and post them.

Chatted with the parents of my gals MYGYM-mates today after their gym class & almost all has the same idea of the seriousness and commercialism of shichida..4 of us are on GD program and i realise these babies are the more responsive, friendly, fun and most importantly very happy babies! I think its a simple program we try at home.. i mean if we cant teach our own child, how much do we expect others to understand and teach them for us? I dont deny it takes alot of sacrifice to spend time with our baby. I sleep like 2am and wakes at 5-6am daily since she arrived. Hubby dont even need baby full concentration, he just chants the san zhi jing while she plays around the bed as part of her bedtime routine! we talk & sing to her all the time, while cleaning, walking to the carpark, waiting for the lift, feeding her, changin diaper, even just walking past her i sing 'the ants go marching one by one, hurrah hurrah" or "i got a new way to walk"..we used to think we wont have time being working parents but somehow we did and its a joyful thing! Time management i guess. my friends ask me how do i find such energy! I dont know! I guess its the love for my baby! Now I want to start the chinese reading & encyclopedia program with her..all included it only takes abt 10-15min a session including praise and hugs!!! I am so excited now just thinking how great this gift to be able to give to my baby..

I dont need a genius HONESTLY.. I just want to do my part & help create another happy, independent thinking individual in this world. If she turns out to be a genius, its the benefit of others that she may help.

Others has advise that we can find similiar materials in growing fun or other educational stores online with the same concept.. but yes, can you check those online stores and post them? I will sell my materials away someday after my second child !!! haha..but we can always hold some kind of exchange. for example, GD kits has some cards in black ink for 0-4mths baby which we dont use anymore so we dont mind letting other mummy try..hey, maybe you should hold some kind of gathering for us to come together for tips exchanging, etc..

Hi hi,

Yes, the most important part is for us as parents to teach our children. The enrichment classes basically share with us the methods and ideas on what to do with the children at home.

Most of the games we play in class are centered around a few objectives

1. Finger training: basically activities to practice fine motor skills
2. Pretend play: the children pretending they are doing something, or someone else.
3. Visualization, visual memory training
4. Learning Concepts such as big, bigger, biggest, numbers, words and alphabets.

Example of games:
1. Using the chopsticks and pretend picking up "fish balls" (cotton balls) from a bowl of noodles and feeding to mummy.
2. Pretending to feed different food to different animals. e.g. you have 5 pictures of different food (corn, carrots etc) and the kid will pretend to feed the correct food to the correct animals
3. Puzzles. Make puzzles out of shapes such as squares, triangles etc first with guiding lines, then without.
4. See picture of blocks arrange in a certain way and get children to recreate the blocks

The class environment is sometimes conducive of the kids trying out the items. e.g. my boy will never do puzzles on his own at home or even with coxing but in class he had been improving in doing the puzzles and some of the other activities as well.

Mincy, I believe in one basic rule. In order to be our children best teachers, we must make everything else fun. Home environment is the most important environment for any child. I will keep trying on my baby if I find that she loves doing or learning some things outside of her home environment! So why not do the puzzles with your son at home like at shichida classes? doing at home with mummy or daddy should be more fun than doing with strangers at this age..but then again, every kid is individual.. good luck and thks for the replies! appreciate alot! let me go play the finger puppet with my gal now! she is waiting !

Shichida / My Smart baby

Postby semibreve » Mon May 12, 2008 5:36 pm

Hi Everyone

I am new to this forum. Just to share my baby is with Schicida Methods. I have never try GD so not sure how good they are. Well as for Shichida it just need a lot of parents commitment from home. I parents have time to practice at least 15 mins a day. Then it will be great. You will see improvement otherwise you may not see results.

Anyone heard ofo My smart Baby also doing flashcard at Seletar Hill ?
I did the trial prog. I like their flashcards and they also teach foreign language in their flash cards plus Tang Shi. But be prepared to enter a noisy environment with all the maids chatting at one corner.

Alice
