or must use back HP?? any PC guru here? :?
smurf, how old is yr HP PC, some of the HP model, the motherboard is proprietary,
so if u change the M/B in other shops, (not HP repair centre),
u may need to change the casing and the power supply too......(additional cost but sometimes may still cheaper than what HP quoted u)

All the peripherals are connected to the MB (motherboard).
If you don't know which is which, then mark each before you remove them so that you can re-connect them to the new MB.
After removing all connections, you just pull out the MB from its connection.

Bring this MB to Sim Lim Sq to get an equivalent replacement or upgrade.
The instructions for setting up the new MB should be included in the package.
The instructions may look complicated but you can do it.

If this still sounds difficult, just pay a small fee to a shop that has this service to do it for you lah.

MBs are pretty standardized in size to fit into most standard size casings.
If he gets an equivalent MB, power supply requirements should be the same.

If your intention is just to change the MB and not upgrade
then u want to minimize changing other stuff or u will end up
changing a lot of things for compatibility.

3 most common problems I've encountered are:

1) RAM
2) power supply unit PSU
3) BIOS battery

for (1), PC starts but cannot go beyond the black screen.

(2), cannot even start

(3), starts, gives some message about settings and hangs. But this usually for PC > 3 yrs old.

hey smurf,

we are in the throwaway age now...

throw it away. i know it sounds rather wasteful but the reality is that after replacing that motherboard you might end up with another probllem 3 months down the road.

keep the hard disk, keyboard, monitor and mouse... and get a new computer from Sim Lim.

budget ones can start as low as $300-400 .
