Which laptop for JC use

Postby sparks » Tue Mar 10, 2015 11:52 pm

Hi, anyone got any idea which laptop is best suited for the needs of a jc student. I'm totally clueless though Ive read to get about 14' ,lightweight, at least 2gb or 4gb better, with dvd, good battery life. Any idea which fits the bill? Dd needs for her project work. Budget not more than $1k? Any other things to consider? TIA

Is a DVD drive really important? Doing without will make it lighter. You can always get an external DVD drive to plug in when necessary (and leave it at home). You can get a smaller screen too - like 11" or 13" - again, to save weight. Every gram counts when you carry it around! It really depends on preference. I don't know about technical things, though.

For JC (and general usage), any laptop capable of running word, excel and powerpoint without significant lag is more than good enough (i.e. > 99% of the laptops out there).

RAM > The more the merrier but 4GB is more than sufficient for JC usage.
DVD > What's that? Given the proliferation of cheap USB drives and cloud storage, hardly any usage for DVD drives these days.
Size > Not less than 13".

For windows laptop, it just boils down to price. Even the cheapest 13" laptop with 4GB RAM running an older windows 7 OS should serve a normal student's basic needs (unless those needs include autocad, photoshop, final cut pro x, etc for students involve in highly technical or specialised field of study).

It's not just the brand, but things like the processor, the screen size etc. My husband takes care of such decisions and just recently bought one for my older daughter, but if you'd like to know more details, I can find out and pm you. He bought her an ASUS, and his description is that it's not extremely high-end, but not low-end either and should be good for 4-5 yrs. She is an average user - mainly surfing, watching Youtube, and basic PC stuff like Word, Powerpoint etc. She's not into games.

I don't know whether prices are controlled, but my husband likes to buy from Challenger where he can add an extra 2 years of warranty (got to pay a bit more), but PCs tend to give problems when they are older.

I had been recommending friends and families to get Dell for several years.

Not because Dell is more superior than other brands, but simply
for its warranty service.

Dell does not maintain a service centre in Singapore. All servicing
is done by Dell appointed engineers and they come to your home/office
to service the faulty device.

I used to own an Acer notebook, and ended up spending hours at Acer
service centre when I brought it in for repair. Once I found out Dell
offer on-site service, I was hooked.

I personally think the windows tablet/laptop surface is gd. Personally use that for its convenience and portability. Plus it's good and easy for note taking too

There is road shows in JC / Poly and Us that will offer laptops at student prices. Keep a lookout for it.
