USB C ports

Postby Jennifer » Tue Oct 25, 2016 9:20 am

I am looking to purchase a laptop, now shortlisted HP Spectre model 13-v011dx
13.3" full HD display
1920x1080 resolution
6th i7-6500U
8GB RAM
256 GB SSD

This comes with three USB ports.

What is a Type C port?

I looked up at cnet, which mentioned USB C ports are multipurpose data, power, accessory connector, 2 also acts as Thunderbolt ports for high speed data transfer

What does the above mean?

How to differentiate the types of USB ports on the laptop, special marking or colour coded?

Appreciate inputs so that I can submit purchase requisition this week.

Many thanks in advance.

USB-C is the latest USB port used in the newer machines.

It looks different so you wont be able to plug in your existing flat USB devices anyway.
Also, the USB C cables can be used either direction (no up no down, both ends also same), so no need to look first before you plug in your USB devices (like Apple's lightning conductor).

You may need to get adapters for some of your older devices to interface with the port but that should be easily available.

USB Type-C is like the One Ring - one port to rule them all.

It's the newest standard and should be available on all newer machines. If you are buying a new laptop, it make sense to future proof it with the newer ports. Accessories optimizing the new ports should be coming shortly, especially after Apple launch their new laptops this week (allegedly with USB Type-C only).

You should be able to get adapter like this so that you can still use your old
USB cable. Check with the notebook seller also. Maybe the notebook
already has one included, or the seller can throw one in foc.

I went to google for more info, did not realize this is a new release from HP this year.

It really looks beautiful.
