March 2019: What's Your Idea of Career Guidance?

Post by KiasuMod » Fri Mar 01, 2019 1:51 pm

We had some great posts for the February Contest. We hope this contest will gather momentum in the coming months.

Alright, now for the March topic: What’s your idea of Career Guidance for your child? Are you the liberal sort who would leave your children to choose their own academic paths and consequently their careers? How far would you go to influence (pressure???) them? Share your thoughts. Post your comments by 26 March 2019.

For the general rules, see https://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/foru ... 99&t=92863

The best post will receive a Food Hamper worth $100, generously sponsored by Simply Hamper

Children, being young, lack the breadth of experience we parents have. I can see that my children have different aptitudes and personalities. I avoid the temptation of telling then you should be a lawyer, or an artist or architect. What I do instead is encourage them to take an interest in different things, especially those that bring out their natural advantages.

I feel that as parents, we can provide advice to our children . As we have lots of experience in the real world and hope to give the best to our kids, we can suggest activities which we are relatable to their future jobs and expose them to those experiences. through this activities, we can determine where their passion is and what they wish to become in the future.

Yes I know that some parents might wish their children to become a certain career profession. if you have other careers that is different from what your child passions, you can try to show them the importance of that career and what contribution will the child make by working in that profession and see if the child is interested.
But every child is different. They have different strengths, different passions, different ambitions. SO i believe that its important to sit down with our children, show love, care and concern for them by taking effort to understand their interests, their enthusiasm, and what their passions are. Imposing a career option on them is like not truly caring for them and this will eventually backfire. We do not want our children for hating us later when they grow up. So i believe to let children chase their own dreams, no matter what it is and if they are really determined to achieve that, encourage them to not give up, to go the distance, to reach the goal .

Children have their own interests and strengths. As parents, I feel that we can support them whenever they are curious about certain professions. For example, they can be inspired by the professions they read about, and we can take the opportunity to share with them what each job entails. If the child is interested to become a policeman, I will point out to him news articles that I come across. If he wants to become a teacher the next day, I will share teachers' experiences that I find online, and so on. As they grow older and become more aware of their own inclinations and abilities, we can even help connect them with people already in those careers and listen to first-hand experiences.

Ultimately children should be free to choose a profession of their liking, whether they are deemed lucrative careers or not. I believe parents should just be guides, and quietly walk this path of growth with them. We give them the freedom to explore because that's what parental love is about!
