Hi, please help me in the following question:
Many thks and God Bless:)

In some open-air restaurants, water mist systems are used to cool the surrounding air. Tiny water droplets are produced in a form of mist.

(i) Explain how the water droplets help to cool the surrounding air.
(ii) Tiny water droplets are better than larger ones. Why?
(iii) Explain why some water mist systems are fitted with fans

This question test the concept of evaporation

Things to note about evaporation,
1. It takes away heat from surrounding. The faster it evaporates the more heat it takes away.

Things that affect the rate of evaporation
1. Higher temperature (Not relevant to this question)
2. More surface area exposed.
3. Presence of wind

My answer,
i) The water droplets will cool the surrounding air by evaporation. As evaporation takes up heat from surrounding air.
ii) For the same mass or volume of water droplets, tiny droplets will have more surface area exposed to the surrounding air compare to larger ones. Hence tiny droplets will have higher rate of evaporation and will result in b̶e̶t̶t̶e̶r̶ faster cooling of surrounding air as it takes up heat during evaporation process.
iii) One factor that increases the rate of evaporation is the presence of wind. Hence with a fan spinning and producing wind, the rate of evaporation will be higher hence result in faster cooling of surrounding air.

In the meantime, you may continue to post your questions and answers in these threads. To ensure that they can be properly transferred to the new platform, please include the following in your posts:
