Help needed for this question, how to solve by P5 method.

Alan and Ben folded some paper cranes.If Alan gives 120 paper
cranes to Ben,both of them will have the same number of cranes.If Ben gives 18 paper cranes to Alan, Alan will have 7 times as many paper cranes as Ben.how many paper cranes does Alan have?
If Alan gives 120 paper cranes to Ben,both of them will have the same number of cranes
Referring to the above statement in red. It would be helpful in the future for other questions you recognize immediately it means Alan has 240 more cranes then Ben.

If Ben gives 18 paper cranes to Alan, Alan will have 7 times as many paper cranes as Ben.
This second statement, imagines if ben reduce by 18, and Alan gain by 18. The gap between the is now 240 +18 + 18 = 276
Modelling it would look like below,
uuuuuuu <- 7u
u <-1u

Gap is 6u. Gap is also 276
6u = 276
u = 276/6 = 46

ben actually has u + 18 = 46+18 = 64

Alan has 240 more = 64 + 240 = 304 ####

George has 9 cards more than 3 times that of Henry's. Izra has 20 more cards than 2/3 that of George while George has 13 cards more than Izra.

(a) How many cards does Izra have
(b) How many cards do the 3 boys have altogether?
Let George be 3u
Izra would have= 2u + 20

George has 13 more than Izra
3u - (2u +20) = 13
3u - 2u - 20 = 13
u = 33

George = 3u = 99
A) Izra = 99 - 13 = 86 #

3 times of Henry + 9 = George
3 times of Henry = 99 - 9 = 90
Henry = 90/3 = 30

B) Altogether they have = 99 +86 +30 = 215 cards ###

A baker baked some cakes.30% of the cakes were chocolate cakes and the rest were pandan cakes. After selling 88 pandan cakes and 5/6 of the chocolate cakes, he has 1/5 of the original number of cakes left.
A)what fraction of the pandan cakes were sold?
B) how many chocolate cakes did he sell?
Since it's a percentage, we let the total cakes in the beginning be 100u. That means 30u for chocolate and 70u for Pandan.

There's two way to refer to the left over.

1st way is 1/5 of the original number.
Leftover = 1/5 X100u = 20u

2nd way to reference to leftover is after he sold 88 pandan and 5/6 chocolate
Leftover = (70u - 88) + 1/6(30u)
= (70u - 88) + 5u
= 75u -88

The leftover are equal,
20u = 75u - 88
55u = 88
u = 1.6

Total cakes in the beginning = 100u = 160 cakes
A) Fraction of pandan cakes sold = 88/160 = 11/20 ##

B) He sold 5/6 of 30u of choc. which is 25u
Choc cakes sold = 25u = 40 ###
I would solve the above problem as follows :
(a)
Total ——- 100u
chocolate : 30u (before)
(5/6) x 30u = 25u
30u – 25u = 5u (after)
100u – 30u = 70u
pandan : 70u (before)
70u – 88 (after)
5u + 70u – 88 = 75u – 88
(75u – 88) x 5 = 375u – 440 ——- 100u
1u ——- 440/(275) = 1.6
70u ——- 1.6 x 70 = 112
88/112 = 11/14

(b)
25u ——- 25 x 1.6 = 40

Ans : (a) 11/14; (b) 40 chocolates cakes.

Hi, My girl is P5 student at MBS in the best class. Her math backslid since SA1, from 95 marks in P4 to 75 marks in SA1 P5 (highest score in class is 99) and scored very bad during few class tests (5/20 etc.). Already had Mind Strecher tuition since P3, I realized she is quite confused on what methods to be used for prob sloving questions. Appreciate your guidence on how to improve her math in short period of time? Also Any other tuition centre can recommend?

My apologies for reading the question wrongly. I had reference to the wrong total when it was suppose to be for total of pandan only.

Hi ksp_2010, Your girl should be v bright and able to catch on fast. Instead of looking for new centre/teachers, have you tried giving her past year papers to work on? I find that this is quite effective since they cover a broad range of questions in one paper. DS2 tend to bring home better marks when we give him pyp to work on before the test.

All the best for her coming CA2, SA2....
