Positive Outcome from AWARE saga
Positive Outcome from AWARE saga
Today the papers reported on 6 new organisations chosen to deliver the sexuality education in schools.
Fei Yue, Cornerstone, Focus on Family, High Achievers, Eka and Youth Group.
I am glad that feedback was taken seriously and a tender was called and MOE also acknowledged that the AWARE had gone beyond the guidelines in their programme which AWARE denied so vehemently during the saga.
The imperative part was the tenderers had to state their stand on 5 key issues:
Premaritial Sex
Abortion
Contraception
Masturbation
Homosexuality
It also mentioned that the programme should teach positive values and attitudes of sexuality with the heterosexual married family as the basic unit of society.
Well, at least those ladies who suffered personal reputation loss during the AWARE saga could see that their acts(though impulsive) have resulted in something positive for the general good of the basic unit of society. I would still like to say to them as a parent.
Hopefully, for the PSLE MT reduction of weightage issue, similar approach will be taken to listen to the concerns and a good measure be meted out to pander to the general good of the majority.

I am surprised that other than Markfch and I, no other parents have a view that a better curriculum has been re-designed to help our children understand sex education with the major issues listed above put in perspective?
Or there are many young parents where their kids are too young to touch on this topic so soon?

It's a sensitive topic and most people don't like to open a can of wormsksi wrote:I am surprised that other than Markfch and I, no other parents have a view that a better curriculum has been re-designed to help our children understand sex education with the major issues listed above put in perspective?

Yes. It's a can of worms. Especially since some of us support Aware.markfch wrote:It's a sensitive topic and most people don't like to open a can of wormsksi wrote:I am surprised that other than Markfch and I, no other parents have a view that a better curriculum has been re-designed to help our children understand sex education with the major issues listed above put in perspective?

my kids are young, but I am also glad about the positive outcomes. Since long time ago, kids tend to listen more to their teachers than parents (sad but true), so it's important that parents are kept informed of the message that is sent out.
I also feel it's a bit insidious (for all the negative connotations) for people to slip in their agendas under guises (whoever that may refer to). But if parents know what the teaching organisation stands for and is agreeable to it, that's good. If parents don't know the values that their kids are imbibing, that's bad.
At this time, I'm not too concerned personally. it'll be when my kids have to undergo the sessions then I will take a closer look. Who knows what could have changed then.

You may be a little too counter-culture for a 'progressive' forum as such .ksi wrote:I am surprised that other than Markfch and I, no other parents have a view that a better curriculum has been re-designed to help our children understand sex education with the major issues listed above put in perspective?

I agree its a good outcome. AWARE remains unrepentant, which tells you a lot about what they were trying to do in the first place.
I'm glad with the outcome that it has led the sexual education to our teens to the right direction after the AWARE saga. Yes kudos to those few women who have suffered public attack. They have brought the awareness to many of what has been going on behind the scene. Honestly, I wasn't aware of this until then. Though they have defeated but they have achieved their objective to bring back the right teaching and moral value to our teens.
Clearly a case of having lost the battle but winning the war. Despite the hubris, where are AWARE now? Whereas the folk who stood up to be counted leave a lingering legacy.Tri-mum wrote:I'm glad with the outcome that it has led the sexual education to our teens to the right direction after the AWARE saga.
