With rising costs and increased learning needs, financing our children's education is no longer a simple walk in the park. Discuss with other parents about how they are managing their finances to cope with their expenses.

Try Charis Movers. Used them twice in last 2 years. Reliable and not expensive

In our first flat, we didn't do aircon at first, then added it later. My advice is - do it up front! The mess caused by adding aircon later is really not worth it. Better to economise on some other things that can be added more easily later.

Yes. Better do this major upfront. Big headache if u've all the mess & retouchup painting works. No joke esp if the trunking hv to options but leaving ugly big jaring tubes before it gets to your living room position. Then u might hv to consider closing gaps in your living/dining area or kitchen if open concept. Big, big headache. Hv it upfront like Janet's hubby - very decisive.

Hi Janet
Aircon - yes please do whole house upfront.

To save costs:
Kitchen counter top can choose formica instead of granite / quartz / marble to save costs.
Shower screens can choose acrylic instead of tempered glass.
TV feature wall choose simple type with lesser cabinets.
Pple say can buy lightings and fans from JB... dunno how to do but interested to learn

Totally agree with doing the infrastructure upfront. Had this exactly in mind when doing house renovation. I allocated most of my budget to do hacking and rewiring (very important), save the trouble of messy hacking or unsightly exposed trucking later. I also did more Power point / Lan point (rather than less) as adding is difficult. Soft furnishings can always add it later when budget less tight.

If you look for auspicious date to move, try to book mover early, as others are also likely looking at these same dates.

I moved twice last year, wanted to use the same mover but their schedule fully booked on that day.

Talking about LAN points, I'm still blur when ID told me no need to put SCV TV points in rooms anymore. Just one TV point in hall and the rooms use Fibre points. True that all using Fibre TV in future?

I was told if want SCV, must have Lan point. I have 1 Lan point in the master bedroom and also Access Point (yes, wifi very important). I have now decided to place my TV on 1 side of the wall (no Lan point) and now relying on AP to surf, doing just fine. If I decide later to have SCV, will move the TV to the other side of the wall. Yes, option is important, took all these into consideration before hacking commenced. I have also thought through all wifi AP points location, CCTV location, check through existing aircon trunking to see if any leakage, and do these wiring/trunking upfront. Main bulk of the renovation time was spent on deciding on wiring (basically trying to avoid telling myself later on "I should have done this and that" etc). I re-did my flooring, take this opportunity to do termite prevention too.

our flat doesn't have afternoon sun...during the weekends we put a mattress in the hall to take a nap with just a fan.
We hardly use aircon at all. If anything, the living room aircon gets used most as we will turn it on when we have guests. But it's useful to have it when you need it.

Btw, might be off-topic a little but thot to share when old stuff before throwing, consider donating to the elderly or needy. What we think as garbage may be still useful for others. When we decided to reno, it was such a sinful waste coz some of our mirrors, ceiling fan, washing machine, sofa, fridge all came to be useful & altho does not absolve my guilt, at least know I didn't just chuck out as garbage.

I put it up on pass-it-on website. Many social workers will try to match yr items with needy homes. One social worker contacted me in my first move abt 8 years ago, for the washing machine for an elderly lady whose fingers getting weak & sole-caregiver to sick old hubby. Then, they contacted SBS/Translink HR & 3 of their staff volunteers came to cart it to the old lady. Some organizations hv encourage community service programmes & give staff use of company vans/lorries & off-day.

Our dining table was given to a single mother with 3 kids for use as study table. Our old KDK ceiling fan was given together with an old fridge to a bakery when I was ordering my CNY cookies & saw they hv a fridge at a corner & just chatted if they need additional. They were so happy to hv it coz they need to store loads of butter & perisables last in Jan.

So hope these can help with reduce-reuse-recycle effort. Now feeling guilty that we had to give away nice curtains just coz we wanted the night curtain sets to match new home decor. :nailbite:

Just finished installing black and white bamboo blinds for my rental unit. Will reno the unit part by part after CNY. The black and white blinds look good, offer privacy but makes the house looks darker inside.
