I am surprised to read this. When I was young, kids only started to learn ABC in P1.
I know I am guilty of posting this in my blog :

It is true that schools expect kids to be able to read a 100 to 200 word passage and do comprehension by answer in complete sentences by March.
However, I think if kids are able to read up to book 4 of the Ladybird key word series, then they should have no problem passing English. In my blog, I wrote that kids will be very well prepared if they are read up to book 6, meaning they will be able to do quite well, not just pass.
I do think that there will be discrimination, and your son will feel discouraged. It is only May now, there is still a lot of time to teach him. If he has not learned phonics yet, it is possible to finish learning by the end of the year.

Re: I want to defer my son from primary 1
This is an interesting thought. I've a an ex-colleague who's DS was also born in Dec. He's a PR and his DS did not have the same early childhood education as the locals here.ffauzia wrote:my son born in dec 2004 and his language skills are quite ok but still i think he is not too ready for primary 1 . if i defer him 1 year from primary 1 is it ok for him. please advice what are the drawbacks?

He had the same dilemma as you. In the end he decided to let his DS repeat K1. But according to him, his DS was really not at the same level as the local kids at the same age group. He couldn't even speak a few words of English.
But if your DS's language skills is ok, then perhaps you can re-consider your decision. Maybe you can further elaborate on what you think is the issue here. I am sure there are many knowledgeable parents here that can provide useful pointers.
Primary 1 deferrment
Hi ffauzia,
My daughter is a Nov 2004 child...she is rather slow in her class. Her teacher told me she was supposed to start spelling this term but then a handful of the children are not ready, so she will start next term instead. I am sending her to RC for P1 preparatory class for Eng and Math. She seems more confident and even had a few spelling tests.
There is still another 6 months more to go b4 Primary 1. Why don't you consider sending him for some preparatory class to prepare him ? If his language skills are ok, you can re-consider like what markfch mentioned.
He will be 1 year slower than his peers if you defer him and if he is actually ready for P1, he might resent the fact that he is in school with classmates younger than him.

A friend of mine once mentioned that her DS's reading was not on par and he was due for P1 the next year.
What she did was to religiously brush up on his reading skills ... think she had a couple of months to do so, but she did it. As Tamarind mentioned, there is still time, so all is not lost.
Hope this helps ....

even IF moe allows it, the child will be teased at, laughed at, when the child goes to P1 and is one year older than the class ...... facts of harsh realities the child has to endure .....
tamarind is right, there is still time to "catch up" .....
BTW, kindy class is still not compulsory, and in my time, everyone learns ABC and 123 in P1.
I know we are supposed to be kiasu here . . . . .lol

why want to waste time in deferring him ??? you should enrol him to classes if you can afford the time and $, OR spent all your time with him and teach him to read. It will be the same the next year if no one coach him.
Furthermore; most pri school will assess the kid on this reading skill and place in on special program if needed.

It is not likely that the child can be deferred for primary 1, unless there are strong medical reasons to do so. In any case, there is a cut off period whereby the deferment application is to be made and i think that date has lapsed already.
I also like you have a son who is born in dec 2004. And like you, i also have lots of hesitation and worries about him going to primary 1 next year. But like what the other mummies said, the only thing to do now is to brush the child up on reading. i did, and he's considered to be reading very well now, he's reading ladybird series 11 already and i sincerely hope that he is well prepared. My son is also weak in chinese, but i find that daily reading and coaching really helps him. Just 15 to 20 min a day sounds little, but over time, i can see the difference.
Just my two cents worth. :-)
